LICKING COUNTY, Ohio – A charter bus carrying students from a Northeast Ohio high school collided with a semi truck on I-70 near state Route 310 Tuesday, killing at least six people and injuring 18 others. Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Among the dead were three teenagers on a charter bus from the Tuscarawas Valley School District, along with two custodians and a teacher in a private car.
What you need to know The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that five vehicles were involved in the crash: a rental bus, two commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles. The Columbus OSHP School Board meeting announced that three passengers on the bus were pronounced dead at the scene. All three people in the passenger car were found dead at the scene.
The charter bus was carrying 54 Tusky Valley students attending an Ohio Association of Schools meeting in Columbus when the crash occurred. According to OSHP, the accident involved a rental bus, two commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles.
Three Students And Three Adults Killed In Ohio School Bus Crash
Three passengers on the bus were pronounced dead at the scene, including 18-year-old John W. of Mineral City, OSHP said. Moseley, Jeffrey D., 18, of Bolivar. Mosely. It is identified as Worrell. and Caitlin Ann Owens, 15, Mineral City.
Two teachers and a teacher in a separate vehicle were also pronounced dead at the scene and identified as Dave Kenath, 56, of Navarre. Christy Gaynor, 39, of Zoar; and Shannon Wigfield, 45, of Bolivar.
One driver of the two commercial vehicles involved was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The second was treated at the scene and released. The driver of the second passenger car was also taken to a local hospital.
“We understand there may be more serious injuries from law enforcement and we are trying to get more information. We will share information with you as soon as possible, as well as our plans for the upcoming school day and events,” TuscarawasValley School. District Executive Director Derek Varansky said on Facebook. “For now, our focus is to connect with our Tusky Valley families and support the entire school community. Difficult times.”

“Our hearts go out and our prayers go out to all the families, everyone on the bus and everyone involved in the crash,” Governor Mike DeWine said at a news conference.
Because the bus was going to a convention, the Tuskegee Valley band had been chosen to perform at the Ohio School Board Association leadership meeting during that convention. To be selected, each group must submit audition tapes/videos for review, according to Jeff Chambers, director of communications services for the Ohio School Boards Association.
State Rep. Brett Hillier, R-Uhrichsville, issued a statement following the crash. Hillier represents the 51st District, which includes Tuscarawas County.
“My heart goes out to the victims, their families and the entire Tussey Valley High School community. My prayers go out to everyone affected by this morning’s tragic accident,” Hillyer said. “I am so grateful for the service and dedication of our first responders. Please join me in keeping our Tuscarawa community in our thoughts and prayers.”
Ohio Charter Bus Crash: Semi Failed To Slow Down Before Fatal Strike
In a statement, charter bus company Pioneer Trails confirmed the incident involving one of its buses on Tuesday morning.
“Pioneer is cooperating fully with authorities as we work to determine the cause of the accident,” the company said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this accident. There will be no further comment as this investigation is ongoing.”
The American Red Cross of Central and Southern Ohio fulfilled a request for blood from one regional hospital by sending 30 units to Mount Carmel Health System hospitals, regional communications director Marita Salkowski said. The Etna United Methodist Church has set up a center for bus passengers who do not need medical treatment and to contact their loved ones, he said.
DeWine ordered the United States flag and the Ohio state flag to be flown at half-staff until sunset on November 18 in Ohio, at the Vern Reef Center and Rhodes Tower in all public buildings and grounds in Tuscarawas and Stark counties.

Statistics are important to understand the reality of the situation. Fortunately, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) maintains extensive data on auto accidents in our state and, unlike other jurisdictions, makes them readily available online.
The OSHP Crash Dashboard breaks down data by county, not city. Therefore, the information we collect here is more focused on the Columbus metropolitan area than Columbus accident data. Additionally, while parts of Columbus extend into Delaware and Fairfield counties, we chose to focus on Franklin County because most of the city is in Franklin County.
