The combination of Rivermark Community Credit Union in Beaverton and Advantis Credit Union in Oregon City will create a credit union with about $3.4 billion in assets and 180,000 members, the third largest in the metro area, according to the National Credit Union Association. .
The combined credit union will have 19 branches and will retain the Rivermark name. It will be based at Advantis headquarters in Oregon, but Rivermark’s headquarters will remain in Beaverton.
The proposed merger comes at a time when some analysts expect credit unions to consolidate, similar to the banking industry. Twenty-seven banks accept deposits in Oregon today, compared to 57 banks a decade ago.

“The only way for banks and credit unions to grow is through (merger and acquisition) activity,” Brian Adams, chair of the University of Portland’s finance department, said in an email. “This trend has been observed since the banking crisis (savings and loans).”
One reason for the potential acceleration of credit unions is an easing of rules about who can join them, Adams said.

The merger is approved by the board of directors of each credit union. It now needs approval from federal and state regulators, then a vote by Advantis members.
Advantis was founded in 1928 by energy company employees. It has approximately 90,000 members and more than $2 billion in assets. Rivermark was founded in 1951 by grocery store employees. It also has approximately 90,000 members and assets of just under $1.4 billion.
