The six people killed early Friday in a collision with a police cruiser in Columbus, Ohio, were members of a family of Iraqi refugees who arrived in the United States less than three years ago.

The victims were identified as Eid Badi Shahad, 39; his wife, Entisar W. Hameed, 31; and their daughters Shuaa Badi, 16; Amna Badi, 14; Ekbal Bai, 12; and Lina Badi, 2.

Shahad and his family were refugees from Basra, Iraq, who resettled in Columbus in January 2011, said Angela Plummer, executive director of Community Refugee and Immigration Services, a nonprofit that helps refugees and immigrants in central Ohio.
They were left to mourn by five sons aged 17-5, who were at home with Shahad’s mother at the time of the accident.
Ohio’s deadliest crash this year occurred when an officer was responding to a report of a robbery in Shahads McDonald’s car while it was stopped at an intersection.
Plummer said that although he hadn’t seen the family in a while, Eid Shahad recently visited the refugee office because he planned to help sponsor a family that will arrive next month.

“We were all devastated, like everyone else; these people lost their lives and the children they live through,” he said. “We hope we can help them in any way we can.”
According to the Columbus Dispatch, Shahad ran a red light at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Fishinger Road around 1:30 a.m. Friday before stopping at the intersection.
“He went through the intersection and stopped for whatever reason,” Perry Township Police Chief Robert Oppenheimer told the Dispatch. “Whether he saw the cruiser coming or ran a red light and realized he was going in reverse, we’ll probably never know.”
It is believed that the police officer involved in the accident was driving at the speed limit, with the police lights and siren on.

Plummer said the local community has come together to support the family. He added that he was encouraged by reports from neighbours, many of whom are Somali refugees, “that they have recognized this family as a very useful member of the community”.
“I’ve heard from members of the community who say we’re all concerned about the children and trying to get support for them,” she said.
“Over the years, I have been very inspired by how refugee communities intervene and help each other, and I am optimistic about what will happen here, but there will also be challenges,” he added.
According to board member Rehan Chawdry, the Young Islamic Cultural Center in Dublin, Ohio, will hold a funeral service and family memorial Saturday night before all six are buried at the Columbus Islamic Cemetery. Six people were killed and at least 20 others injured Tuesday morning when a charter bus carrying high school students crashed into a tractor trailer on a highway in central Ohio.
The five-vehicle crash happened just before 9 a.m. on Interstate 70 near Highway 310 in Etna near Columbus, Ohio Highway Patrol Lt. Nathan Dennis said this at a press conference on Tuesday.
Three of the victims were students at Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools: John W. Mosely, 18; Jeffery D. Worrell, 18; and Katelyn N. Owens, 15. Also dead were high school teacher Dave Kennat, 56, and two parents who served as pallbearers: Kristy Gaynor, 39; and Shannon Wigfield, 45.

“There are no words to express the magnitude of loss and grief we all feel,” said Dr. Varansky. As each name was read, mourners shouted loudly in the background and watched as six candles were lit.

Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools Superintendent Derek Varansky said Tuesday that the students and champions were on their way to the Ohio School Boards Association conference in Columbus when their charter bus was involved in a “very serious accident.”
A total of 54 students and chaperones, including high school students, parents and teachers, were on board the bus, state police said.
Samantha Bosler, a 17-year-old saxophonist in the Tuscarawas Valley High School band who was riding the bus, told ABC News that the truck hit the “entire rear end” of the vehicle.
“The tires were off the ground and they were in the back. We could smell smoke and there were flames,” Bosler said.

Bosler said he was sitting in the back of the bus in front of the bathroom at the time of the accident. He said he felt the seat hit him on the left side of his head, but was otherwise fine. But across the aisle, he saw his companions under the seats, some of whom were unconscious, he said.
“We were really influenced by the people around us,” he said. “I have to choose the right place today.
Bosler said he’s been playing music on the bus with many students since sixth grade, and it broke his heart.
Pioneer Trails said it is fully cooperating with authorities in determining the cause of the accident.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this accident,” the company said in a statement. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will not comment.”
NTSB Homendy said agents will go to the crash site Wednesday to begin the investigative process, which will include things like in-vehicle cameras or bus cameras, if they have them.
Investigations typically take 12 to 18 months, but the agency will issue a preliminary report on the crash in the coming weeks, Homendy said.
