We understand that great teachers are always looking for new ways to improve their teaching and engage their students. With a small class budget, teachers often use their own money to buy things to provide quality education to their students, and KCCU wants to help these worthy teachers.
The KCCU Teacher Grant Program launched in 2021 and will return this year to provide classroom funding for local teachers. Fifteen (15) teachers were selected to receive $400 to purchase classroom supplies, a total of $6,000 to go back into the classrooms of the communities they serve!
“At KCCU, we are committed to supporting teachers who are educating students and future leaders,” said Tracy Miller, KCCU principal. “We know that teachers work hard and spend time and money to teach their students the best. We hope that through this grant, teachers can find the tools and resources they need to be successful in the classroom.”

“My students are multilingual students who come to school with different needs,” said Parkview Elementary English teacher and KCCU Teacher Grant recipient Casey Quick. “I need different things in my classroom to help students improve their English skills. This award will help me buy classroom supplies, books, and teaching materials that will help me meet the needs of many students. Learning a new language is very difficult,” added Miss Quick, “but when I see students reading and writing new words, expanding their understanding of how English is used and often spoken in class, I am full of joy. Being a part of a student’s language learning journey is really special.
The KCCU Teacher Grant Program is open to all teachers, pre-K through 12th grade, who teach in the 15 districts where KCCU serves. KCCU is proud to donate $1,000 to support the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Children’s Heart Challenge. The funds are being used as part of the Adopt a School program and will greatly benefit the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Academy at Comstock Public School.
The Kids Heart Challenge promotes good heart habits when students pledge to be physically active, drink plenty of water and do good work. Formerly known as the Jump Rope for Heart Initiative, the Kids Heart Challenge offers four activities to get students’ hearts racing: jump rope, basketball, dance and an obstacle course while supporting the work of the American Heart Association.

In the past year with the Covid epidemic, schools have seen an increase in demand for physical education equipment due to the real learning and hygiene requirements. To complicate matters, the budget for school supplies is shrinking. KCCU saw an opportunity to help address this issue by supporting the Kids’ Heart Challenge Adopt a School, and welcomed the Comstock Public Schools STEM Academy with a voluntary donation of $1,000 to the American Heart Association. Funds will provide schools with gift certificates to purchase desired PE equipment, as well as behavioral education courses.

For nineteen consecutive years, KCCU hosted the Salvation Army Angel Tree Toy Drive, using its eight branches in Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids as drop-off points for toy donations. In addition, KCCU’s Three Rivers branch collects toys for the United Way of St. Joseph County and the Marshall branch sponsored There’s Enough dolls. KCCU’s annual Toy Drive is a favorite event for all staff and members, it’s great to know that by donating toys, games or gift cards, you are directly impacting West Michigan kids by bringing holiday magic and joy.
