Many memories of the trip came to mind, so I started writing the story over and over again. Amy and I live in the countryside, in a place we don’t know, but to us, it’s home. We started construction on our home in the fall of 2017 on just over 3 acres of land. Our house was completed in the spring of 2018. It took a lot of manpower, but I was able to complete it with the help of my family. Amy thought about getting a dog and I can tell you all that was the furthest thing from my mind. There were lots of ATVs, back roads, woodlands, streams, etc. What more could you ask for? Amy and I worked out almost every day, took long walks, and ate very healthy food. Considering our age, we were very happy with what we were able to accomplish. One day, I got injured at work. I not only hurt my knees but also my lower back. I tried to continue exercising, but the pain started. Amy sometimes went alone and I was fine with that. We live in a safe area. In my case, I had extra time to eat part of the day. I’ll keep this story short, but one day, for some reason, I decided to look into registered sex offenders in my county. We were thrilled to learn that such a place existed just a mile or so from our home. I couldn’t quickly find enough information other than that this man robbed and raped women. This was all the information I needed. I told Amy that she should not walk unless she had a gun. I think this is sufficient for very short periods of time, such as a walk or two. Without telling Amy, I started thinking about getting a dog for her protection. I silently searched the internet, read about different dog breeds, and kept coming back to German Shepherds. I’m into the business field, importing dogs, different breeds, the list goes on. I continued to do my homework on German Shepherds and emailed and spoke to several breeders. It’s time to think about Amy. She couldn’t get her words out of her mouth fast enough and she was talking about getting a puppy. When I told her about the research I had done, the different breeds of German Shepherds, and the costs, she was already on her phone looking for toys and such for her dog. We made arrangements to visit a breeding site several hours away. Something inside me told me this wasn’t the way to go. But we listened, we watched, and we learned. You can always learn from both positive and negative experiences. I found a place in Washington State that imports and sells adult German Shepherd dogs, but they also sell puppies. I came across Kraftwerk K9 early on in my quest to learn and learn everything I could about German Shepherds. Amy didn’t know what kind of investment she would need, so I kept looking, and each time, she said it was a hunch, but I had a hunch that I would go to Kraftwerk. Ta. I called a couple of times to see if I would get there right after I passed the T-junction. I continued to send Amy pictures of the puppies, but I started including pictures and videos of the adult dogs as well. Something inside me wanted to get an adult dog. You’ve weighed the pros and cons and are ready to make your purchase. Amy still needs time. We always act on our intuition and that feeling should come from both of us. We saw a guy on the Kraftwerk website and we both wanted him. I wanted to call and ask some questions and think about it for a few days. Well, if you fall asleep, you lose. Well, let’s go back to square one. We were already planning on buying an adult dog, but weren’t satisfied with a regular dog. What we wanted was something with no top shelves, no top drawers, and no latches. It was like one day bam – honey, look at this female, here’s the video, look at that male, he’s a unique one. I couldn’t get through to the phone number right away, plus I was at work and so was Amy. I called Kraftwerk and spoke to Wayne Carey. He went into every detail imaginable about the women and men we see. They were the best he had imported and he told me more about the German owners and what kind of dog they were. I got them both right away. Holy cow! We bought two dogs for him instead of one and are planning on traveling to Indianapolis on this day. I didn’t even have a place to put it, but it was scheduled to arrive in two weeks. Amy bought two big boxes, we went Amish, and we ended up with 1,300 square feet of land. This building was designed and engineered to our specifications. We all went out again. What we call the “kennel” has three dog crates, an outdoor kennel and an indoor area. The kennel has a small garage and office, and the upper level has a large deck with a dog bath, washer/dryer, and bathroom, plus central air and heating throughout the building. I will. We were up and running, let me tell you. It’s time for Zeke and Yankee to head to their new home in Indiana with us. They flew from Washington to Indy on a very bad day. The roads were very slippery, icy and the temperature was below freezing. It didn’t matter because we were ready and we were excited. Due to a tight schedule, I was no longer able to accompany Amy to pick up the dog from the airport. Amy immediately invited her sister and her husband to join us on the trip. The whole family watched flights online all day long. Flight time will be approximately 5 hours. Amy took photos throughout the day and sent me photos showing where the plane was in the sky, its altitude, and speed. Her niece’s job was to accompany her to the airport and take pictures of her while she was working and send them to me. The two arrived safely and met in the garage when they returned home. Amy had two large boxes for each and a heated garage so they were safe, sound and ready to be loved. Our new “kennel” has been delivered and along the way it has gotten really big. After installation, work began. Wiring, sealing, insulation, drywall, heat and air, painting, flooring, finishing, washer/dryer installation, dog baths, and oh yeah! hundreds more. When I visited the Kraftwerk website one night, just a few months after picking up Jicky and Yankee, there was this black woman with a V rating, and she was amazing at every command Wayne gave her.
