ATLANTA – The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that killed two people and injured another Thursday morning in northwest Atlanta.

Atlanta police officers attempted to stop a Toyota Rav 4 on Northside Drive at 17th Street. They said the driver hit his right turn signal “as if the driver was going to stop” and then swerved, ran a red light and hit the Mitsubishi Outlander. The crash happened near the intersection of Northside Drive and 14th Street.

“Approximately 37 seconds elapsed from the initial attempt to stop the vehicle to the time of the crash,” APD said Thursday around 1:30 p.m.
The department still has not said why it conducted a traffic stop on the Toyota Rav 4. A statement to GSP said they responded around 2:38 and began taking over the investigation.
A woman who works at Krystal’s across the street from where the incident occurred said she wasn’t sure what the noise was until she looked outside.

The Georgia State Patrol added that the driver, 39-year-old Guillermo Bracho Barrios, and the front-seat passenger of the other vehicle, 27-year-old Gemini Jerome Jackson, were both Distressed. The three backseat passengers were taken to Grady Hospital with unknown injuries.

A Clayton County officer was returning home along I-675 South around 6:08 a.m. when he spotted a vehicle in the middle of the grass with its headlights on, officials said.
After turning around and parking the vehicle, the officer saw the driver passed out behind the wheel. The police knocked on the window and woke the driver. Officers noticed the driver was disoriented, had glassy eyes and was sweating profusely.
After being asked to open the door, the driver started the car and was speeding in the wrong direction in the southbound lane, officials said. The officer ran back to the car to follow and found the wreckage about a mile away.
SKYFOX 5 flew over the scene of the crash and saw several patrol cars blocking the road and police setting up tape and tarps at the crime scene.

At this time, investigators It is unclear if the driver suffered injuries or a medical emergency, but it is believed the driver was responsible for the accident.
Another driver involved in the crash died from his injuries. Police have not released the condition or identity of the other person.
