Jason Pappas, head of the city’s police union, said the officer was in stable condition despite a serious head injury.

The crash closed Riverside Drive in both directions at the intersection with Fishinger Road, where the crash happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. local time, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Cicero said the officer involved in the collision was driving at a normal speed with his police car’s lights and sirens on. He currently has no suspensions or tickets pending against him. Dash cam video of his car, which was heavily damaged in the collision, will be reviewed.

Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the accident, but there is no reason to suspect that anyone was a suspect or that the family was involved in the alleged robbery.
