Established in 1986, Southern School of Nursing (SON) currently offers four degrees: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) specialization in family health; Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP); and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a nursing concentration. The graduate nursing program has expanded to fulfill the promise of creating a stronger and more diverse advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) workforce in Louisiana and has graduated more than 45 students since its inception as a DNP. SON brings health care to the community through an academic practice partnership with Ochsner Health System, Louisiana’s largest health system. It also serves as an innovative community-based clinical learning experience for graduate and undergraduate nursing students, a health education program, and screening for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
