April is National Credit Union Youth Month, a time when credit unions across the country focus on encouraging healthy savings habits among young people in their communities.
For First Community Credit Union, located in Autumn, Iowa, it’s another opportunity to do what we do year-round – provide valuable financial education tools and resources to area children.
“Last year’s theme was the science of saving, and the love of saving for kids and their families,” said Lindsey Gold, First Credit Union Community Marketing Program Coordinator.

“We’re taking a trip to the Des Moines Science Center with a cash prize,” Gould said. “For the kid who won, I think it was a defining moment in that family’s life to be able to pay for a trip like that. It was a moment of real joy.”
She entered the annual contest and was randomly selected because of her child’s participation in the credit union’s Dollar Dog Kids Club savings program, she said. The grand prize was a trip to a science center with money for food and travel for a family of four
The Dollar Dog Kids Club program is one of two youth-focused initiatives that encourage good financial habits at an early age. Dollar Dog is for kids under 12, while the credit union’s Club Voce Voce is for 13- to 17-year-olds.
“Financial education for both programs is a big step for us,” Gould said. “We’re making connections by going to schools. We want to teach kids about finances, how to be responsible with their money and the difference between good and bad financial decisions.”

Community First Credit Union was founded in 1936 as Dane Employees Federal Credit Union in Autumn, Iowa. The institution continued to grow throughout the 20th century, then expanded in the early 2000s, opening several branches in southeast Iowa. “The Dollar Dog Kids Club program is a great way to reach kids and get them thinking about saving at an early age,” she said. He said that the program’s focus is on healthy saving habits, not checking accounts, because children under 12 years of age do not need checking accounts.
Dollar Doggies earn Doggy Dollars by depositing them into their bank accounts for $10 per day, up to a maximum of $100 per day.

When Gould spoke with us, the team was gearing up for this year’s National Credit Union Youth Festival, which is always a great time to get more kids into the community, he said.
He said, “In the month of April, we have double dollar offers and various competitions. We want kids to be active and we want them to feel safe coming here.
Credit unions want to make sure kids know they can ask questions about savings and finances, and Gould and his team are there to help, he said.

“We’re targeting about 15 different communities, mostly in southeast Iowa,” he said. “Spring is a very busy time as teachers try to get guest speakers into the classroom before school lets out for the summer.”
He said he now speaks to one class a week. During the fall and winter, Gould usually visits the classroom twice a month
