Castro said a 42-year-old man was driving a Dodge Magnum northbound in the southbound lanes when he collided with a Honda Civic. After the first crash, a Ford driven by a 32-year-old man collided with a Dodge.
The 52-year-old woman who was driving the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released to inform his family.
The three drivers and one passenger in the Honda were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
All lanes of southbound I-5 were diverted to SR-56 and closed while the accident was investigated from Carmel Valley to southbound I-5. The road reopened around 6am.

San Diego Fire Rescue firefighters are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 5 south of Interstate 905 Friday morning. Three people were killed in the accident, which occurred around 10:25 a.m., officials said. Two of the dead were San Diego police officers.

California Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Bettencourt said the crash happened just before 10:25 a.m. on I-5 near State Route 905. He said the car was traveling in the wrong direction at a “high speed.”

“I was at home and I heard a loud noise, like tires screeching on the sidewalk,” said Michael Comfort, who was nearby at the time of the accident.
Comfort added that he saw firefighters using safety equipment to pull the dead man from the car.

A driver was killed Saturday morning in a crash on Interstate 94 near Golden Hill in San Diego that closed several lanes for several hours.
At approximately 8:51 a.m. Saturday, an unidentified driver was driving a Mini Cooper northbound on Interstate 15 westbound on SR-94 when the vehicle left the left lane and struck a concrete wall.
