Cox Provides Free Access To Its Wi Fi Hotspot Network In Las Vegas Metro Area Through February 12
With Nevada school closures, education has been forced online, but in the world of digital education, children without secure Internet access are being left behind.
In Clark County, the district partnered with Cox Communications to address this issue and expand internet access to students in need. The company’s Connect2Compete program for low-income families on government benefits was first launched in 2012 and has expanded significantly in recent weeks, with the company now offering two months of free services to those in need.
“It’s based on a national survey of what our communities need across the country,” Tamar Hoapili, Cox Las Vegas director of community affairs, said of the program’s creation. “Most jobs are connected to cell phones … but not really connected to the home.”
Previously, families had to meet several criteria to qualify for the program. In addition to having at least one K-12 student in the household and receiving public assistance, families must have no debt with Cox or be a Cox customer for 90 days prior to applying.

“Because of the epidemic, we knew there was a need for students, so we made some changes,” Hoapili said.
Cox has now waived bad loans, allowing low-income families and students to sign up for the Cox Agreement. In addition, Cox offers the first 60 days of service free, with no additional data and speed increases for existing customers. After the first 60 days, the service is $9.95 per month.
“If we have existing customers (Connect2Compete), we will increase the service level from 25 Mbps to 50 Mbps,” Hoapili said. “So there are some benefits for our existing customers. During a disaster, their speed will be higher.”
To simplify the application process for families and ensure access to every home in need, Cox works directly with the school district to identify homes that qualify for services. School administrators provide Cox with a list of addresses for families eligible for the program, and those families are automatically approved by simplifying the online application process for families.

Hopeful Cox explained that no student or family will be named, but that families at the relevant address will automatically receive services if they apply.
While Clark is the only state in Nevada that works with Cox, other school districts in the area offer resources to families who need Internet access. Washoe County recommends contacting Charter or AT&T, which offers unlimited Internet for $10 a month to low-income families.
In addition to the Connect2Compete program, Cox has made additional efforts to help families during the pandemic. While on-the-ground technicians are not allowed to enter homes to provide support, they do visit homes to provide assistance over the phone or from a safe distance. Cox also launched more than 3,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in Southern Nevada, supporting the Federal Communications Commission’s mission to connect Americans.

Cox Communications Home Internet Review: Decent Speeds, But At What Price?
Cox Communications announced Monday that its Cox Mobile cell phone service will be available in three markets, including Las Vegas, starting at $15.
This service is available to Cox home internet customers and allows customers to bundle their phone, cable and internet bills.
While the service is only available in Las Vegas, as well as Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Omaha, Nebraska, the company’s press release said it plans to roll out to other markets “continuously throughout the year.” The company serves 6.5 million customers in 18 states.
Suzy Black-Manriquez, Cox’s director of communications, said it considers a number of factors when determining where to launch cell phone service, including “regional presence, sales force readiness and capacity expansion.”

“We are closely monitoring the wireless industry and believe it is time to take action based on customer demand,” Gara-Manriquez said in an email.
Customers can choose between two data plans: Pay As You Go and Gig Unlimited.
Pay as you go, allowing customers to pay only for the data they use, and $15 per gigabyte per month. Gig Unlimited costs $45 per month and gives users unlimited data.
Both plans offer unlimited calls and texts, 4G LTE and 5G coverage, and access to Cox’s Wi-Fi hotspots, Cox said.

Black-Manriquez said that because customers don’t sign an annual contract, they can change their data plan “as needed.”
Cox isn’t the first cable and Internet provider to launch cell phone service. Dish Wireless rolled out its first 5G network in the Las Vegas Valley earlier this year.
“We conducted extensive research to understand what our customers want and expect from a mobile service provider,” he said. “Cox Mobile gives our customers what they’ve been asking for – a simple, flexible and secure mobile experience wherever they go.”
