Community Choice Credit Union Des Moines – In 2009, Polk County hired OPN Architects to renovate and expand the Veterans Memorial Auditorium at the Iowa Events Center and provide an additional 60,000 square feet of meeting, ballroom and exhibit space.
The renovation of the 55-year-old auditorium will allow the center to host larger events, including state, regional and national conventions and expos. The dramatic renovation included the removal of 7,200 auditorium seats and the creation of a second floor, providing an additional 63,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space in the auditorium.

Key design elements include divisible space for maximum flexibility of use and function, drive-in dock access, audiovisual, acoustic, electrical, lighting and low voltage systems adapted to the function and use of the space. A new waiting or staging area for food service equipment will be added to support the new banquet facilities. The project integrates and utilizes existing building automation and MEP systems.

The design and reconstruction of the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center was completed in conjunction with interior renovations of the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Originally built in 1954, the venue was partially renovated in the mid-1980s with the addition of the West Auditorium. Renovations focused on upgrading public circulation, accessible access, creating spaces for outdoor events, commemorating an existing dedicated monument, and renewing plaza plans. The focus was on creating large yet intimate event spaces, with soft-scape and plantings used to define dynamic spaces for small and large events. Private space was also created outside the event space for small conversations and individual reflection.
The project presented logistical and time challenges. The main one was the need for the center to be operational and fully functional in all phases of this renovation. Creative planning and diligent attention to the project schedule allowed the team to meet these challenges. The ballroom created the biggest renovation challenge both aesthetically and acoustically. With such a large open ceiling (nearly 50 feet at its peak), the architect wanted a warm, intimate feel for the dancing, while also using the dramatic height of the room to create the necessary amount of space. He also wanted to use materials to achieve the best possible acoustic treatment, as the building was originally constructed with little attention to sound control.
The solution created by Golden Valley Supply was unique 2″x7’x24″ fiberglass pods covered with white painted fabric material and included an integrated 8″ recessed border around the perimeter. These pods were to be placed on the sides of the room to be installed. approximately 30′ tall in a small radius from side to side to create a barrel effect on a 38′ peak. To build the clouds they had to use five 4’x7′ panels and two 2’x7′ ends are constructed, which are screwed to the drywall hanging rails with resin patches on the back of the panel.

The height at which these panels were installed also created a problem for the installers, as the contractor was not authorized to use a lift that could extend more than 30 feet in height to the newly installed floor. Because the clouds were so large and made of fiberglass, it was almost impossible to build them in the air. After much discussion between all parties involved, the creative solution was to build the shoulders on a platform on the ground and then lift them at the 4 corners with winches. The contractor then leveled the clouds with hangar cables and lowered the platform to the ground. It worked like a charm.
The beautifully renovated auditorium has regained its important place on the pulse of the great state of Iowa.
