There’s no point in spending £1,000 on a flashy BMW or luxury Jaguar if you have to spend half that to run it. Full service history and warranty can be long, but look for evidence of regular (and preferably recent) maintenance – including consumables such as tires. Check your MOT history online to see if there are any warnings and make sure all the relevant paperwork is there and correct – especially the V5C registration form. Cars that have been modified from the original specification may be more expensive to insure, while cars with larger engines may cost you more in VED (road tax).

Service is cheap and spare parts are readily available. And best of all, the Astra is the ultimate bargain – the most modern and innovative car money can buy. Even for that money, there’s plenty of choice, although we’d go for the smaller model – the Life or Design model with a 1.4 or 1.6-litre petrol engine – for the best chance of getting a solid example.
Combining equipment with a £1,000 sportswear budget is a thankless task, but not entirely necessary. It will take a little searching, but you can just drive up to the awesome coupe if you don’t bother with the badge too much. The Hyundai Coupe may not have the panache of a BMW or an Audi (or a Fiat Coupe, for that matter), but it’s one of the best-looking cars available at this price point, with a stunning design that’s timeless. Today Just as attractive inside, with a reliable 2.0-litre 141bhp engine, the coupe is ready to drive. It’s also very useful in the coupe, as the boot opens in hatchback configuration and the two small rear seats can be split and folded. There’s not much that can go wrong with it – just listen for the clutch whining to indicate that a change is imminent.
The first generation Yaris was somewhat of an inspiration when it arrived in 1999 – after the utterly uninspiring Starlet, its sleek styling and sleek interior made it popular with modern minicars and supermen. That’s good news because it means there are still plenty of models out there, helped by Toyota’s reputation for making reliable cars. Do not choose too much in this budget – if you are looking for one of the latest high-end cars, they are probably too fast, so go for the first model with black plastics and a low spec and none. Don’t be afraid to look at a low mileage example as these cars carry miles well. Avoid the 1.0-litre automatic though – its gearbox can be tricky, although if you’re looking for an auto, the 1.3-litre is very reliable. Other than that, there’s not much to worry about in terms of mechanics, so grab the best model you can find.
The original Ford Ka is now racing, but time has done nothing to dampen the fun to be had with this little racer. From the stunning exterior design to the sophisticated, simple interior, the Ka is a car you’ll easily fall in love with. Its star turn, however, is the way it takes corners: it’s not a Porsche, of course, but it handles with precision, sharpness and lightness reminiscent of the original Mini. Admittedly, there are downsides – the engine is noisy and the chassis is prone to significant corrosion issues, so getting it clean and tidy is a no-brainer. And do not expect to sit comfortably in four meters – the rear seat is more suitable for children, so its functionality is limited. But as a fun and enjoyable way to travel, it can’t be beat at this price. Running costs will also be lower due to lower insurance premiums and more reasonable MPG.

The second generation Panda was smart, stylish and handled well – but what won many fans over was its spaciousness.
