The homework policy is humane. From kindergarten to first grade, homework is optional and sometimes tailored to target needs. “These kids need to play,” Taylor said. “These are too reserved children.
Homework starts in earnest in third grade, four days a week, and there’s a lot of homework in high school, the principal said.
There is plenty of time for art outside of academia. All elementary students take violin lessons, and outside organizations bring music, theater and movement. Sixth graders engage in activities such as journalism, visual arts, performing arts and documentary production. They decide which art to focus on in seventh and eighth grade.

Class size is 25 students in kindergarten, but up to 32 students in grades one through five. The principal says that she is not holding back because of the high demand at the school. An exception is the twice-weekly counseling center for secondary schools, which has only 10 children. It gives them an opportunity to do social-emotional work in the classroom and learn skills, Taylor said.
Students turn to the city authorities if something concerns them. For example, children pressurize independence during lunch and encourage boys and girls to sit together at tables.
The school aims to build a strong culture of support through tribal learning community workshops. Building a cohesive community is a challenge for a school that draws its students from diverse neighborhoods, Taylor said. Students come from nearby Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Brighton Beach, Bath Beach and Bensonhurst, but dozens come from downtown and Brooklyn, and a few commute from Staten Island and the Rockies in Queens.
Taylor says parent involvement is huge, with packed school information nights, jam-packed presentations at parent-teacher conferences and extensive fundraising that pays for special enrichment.

While BSI easily shares its building with the Academy for Gifted Scientists and School District 75, the shared school yard is quite small, which is a disadvantage for younger children. High school students are allowed out of the building for lunch and often meet at the town playground across the street, supervised by assistants. The building is light and airy, but there are no lockers, so backpackers tend to line the odd corridors.
Special Education: About a dozen children have individual paraprofessionals who deal with issues such as ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) or ADHD. The school also has occupational therapy, an educational counselor and SETSS.
Reception: The main entry point to the school is Kindergarten, with a few places opening up above this level as class numbers increase or families move. Current fifth graders have priority for middle schools, and competition is intense for the remaining spots.
