“This is not meant to be a ranking of which are the best and which are the worst health care jobs,” said Craig Donahue, vice president and chief operating officer of the Michigan Health Council.
“Our mission is to provide leaders and decision makers with meaningful and insightful data to understand the current state of the individual profession and the collective healthcare workforce across multiple factors. This will help us implement policies that will allow our state to build a strong healthcare workforce and sustainable.”

Average hourly wages for nurses in 2021 will be $49.02, up from $30.01 a decade ago, according to the index. Another 6,177 jobs are expected to be added at the mine by 2032.
The ranking of health care occupations with the highest projected shortages over the next 10 years puts radiation therapists at the top of the list, while general dentists lead all other occupations in terms of the highest turnover rate.
When job growth, shortages, wage changes and turnover are combined, the top five occupations in the index are nurses, optometrists, general dentists, nurse anesthetists and radiation therapists.
Based on these criteria, “minimum hygiene occupations” include dental assistants, nursing assistants, pharmacy technicians, dental hygienists and emergency medical technicians.

“The data clearly shows the challenges facing Michigan’s health care industry, but it also opens up exciting opportunities,” said Michelle Wein, director of research for the Michigan Health Council. “We hope that the insights gained from the index will spark an informed discussion about how best to improve the capacity of Michigan’s health care workforce.”
In creating the index, the Michigan Board of Health found that jobs that do not experience shortages, especially in rural areas, still have distribution problems.
