Craig Korzynski. , as we passed several docks full of iguanas. “The peacock bite is at its best around noon, but we have some giant snook we can target in the meantime.” For years, butterfly urchins were my ideal fish to catch, but due to the high cost of travel to South America, it seemed like it wouldn’t be checked off my bucket list. That is, until you discover a small area in Southeast Florida where these cruel imports thrive. Introduced by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission in the 1980s as a means of controlling Maya cichlid populations, this fierce exotic thrives year-round in the warm conditions of the Sunshine State, along with the Midas cichlid, oscar, jaguar guapote (tiger Bass), target snakehead and clown knifefish. Unable to tolerate high salinity and water temperatures below 62 degrees, the peacock’s distribution is geographically restricted to urban canal systems throughout the southeastern region of the state.
The mild tropical climate of Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Dade counties is similar to the peacock’s native habitat in Brazil. Broward and Miami Dade are considered the heart of peacock country, but after several years of mild winters, large numbers have migrated north to the Palm Beach County chain of lakes. Connecting Pine Lake south of West Palm with Clark Lake, Osborn Lake, Eden Lake and ending at Lake Ida near Delray Beach, the 30-mile chain is also known for producing giant largemouth bass. Generally considered to be at the northern end of the peacock’s range, this area is an important crossroads for targeting both species. Surrounded by hundreds of residential canals, which are great destinations for peacocks, each lower chain lake has a deep linear trough called the West Palm Beach Canal that runs north and south. The debris from its construction creates waves at the bottom which attract large numbers of people throughout the year.
“Then, just throw it straight,” Korzinski pointed out, looking at the screen of his Humminbird Helix 10. “We should be right on the mound.” I started casting worms in the morning near the canal in Llyn
