And really, there’s no way to list them all, so instead I’ve chosen my personal list of must-see restaurants in Des Moines, Iowa. The one I would recommend if you called and told me you were in town for an event, a bachelorette party, or just a night out downtown. The city’s restaurant scene has grown and continues to grow into an impressive mix, and here are my favorites based on why I love going.
As one of the first restaurants I fell in love with when I moved to Des Moines, Centro will always be a top contender. They are a staple in downtown Des Moines and serve Italian cuisine. They specialize in pizza/salad combos and homemade bread from the neighboring South Union restaurant. A perfect mix of modern finishes, vintage decor and original floor tiles. You are greeted by the smell of garlic and red wine, followed by a waiter in a traditional white shirt with a black tie and the clink of dishes and chatter echoing from above. Roof. What a great place to eat and host guests from out of town.
Once upon a time, when T and I went into town every weekend, exile was our routine. Meet there for beer and programs and then hit the bars. This unique, renovated warehouse is now a brewery serving Des Moines’ most famous local beers. You can’t leave without stopping at the beer hall and then heading to the restaurant for an equally delicious meal – a beer to match. From burgers to gourmet macaroni and cheese, there’s something for everyone.
New Italian Restaurant Allora To Open In Downtown Des Moines
High Life Lounge is definitely the place to be if you’re looking for simple bar food with ice cold beer. This retro style feels like a time machine — on purpose — and sipping on a $2 Miller High Life makes it even better. Oh, and you can’t beat the $5 burger baskets. Or just order a few rounds of the infamous bacon-wrapped tots and you’re good to go. However, you will enjoy the food along with the shaggy carpet, the old Schlitz commercials, and the great company. It’s an interesting spot before a sporting event, as a pit stop on the bike path or for a quiet evening.
The perfect atmosphere with an extensive cocktail menu and shared plates. What could be better for a date night or a girls’ night out? That doesn’t work. The dimly lit, charming eatery is one of my favorite places to go when the weather gets colder. It’s always a pleasure. From their signature smoked whiskeys to their crab cake sliders, I was able to order anything from the menu all evening. I’d recommend making a reservation on the weekend as seating is limited, but there are also lovely sofas and low cocktail tables in the front area (first come, first served).
Good quacamole and fish tacos are usually enough to win my heart, but Malo’s has that and more. One of the most unique menus I have personally seen in the city. There are so many things to try that I can’t even begin. Furthermore, not only is the food exceptional, the atmosphere is also extremely unique. With its location in the heart of the city, right in the middle of the community club, this is an interesting place to visit. I often eat lunch and order tacos and salad from the menu. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water!
