Think of your primary care provider or PCP as the main person in charge of your care. You can see them every year or regularly.

“The most important relationship you need to make sure you’re getting the right care is with your primary care provider,” says Stephanie Patterson, MD. Where To Get Care

Let’s say you sprain your neck and hope the doctor will take care of it. You can certainly schedule a virtual call with your PCP, but it’s not always possible after hours.

Another option is to go to the emergency room. This is a type of medical facility that you can go to when you need immediate care for something that is not life-threatening. They may be open longer and later than your doctor’s office, and may even be open on weekends. (Check your local listings for ambulance service near you, and check with your insurance plan to see what ambulance services are available.)

If you wake up in the middle of the night with a mild fever, the doctor’s office is closed and there may not be a doctor. Going to the emergency room in the middle of the night may not be the best option.

Where to go for care depends on the situation. “Everything is on a spectrum,” says Dr. Patterson. “It depends on how big your problem is and how urgent your need is.”

Don’t be afraid to follow your instincts. “Patients should trust their gut,” he says. And remember, your care team can help you plan for future situations — and guide you when something happens.
