Hilton Hotel Baton Rouge Louisiana
Explore the Capitol Hilton Baton Rouge, where Paul Cyr has been working since Huey P. Long refused to step down as governor.
Hotel Tru By Hilton Baton Rouge I 10 East, La, Baton Rouge ***
Founded in 1927, the Capitol Hilton Baton Rouge Resort has been a member of the Historic Hotels of America list since 2007.
The Capitol Hilton Baton Rouge Center was built in the Roaring Twenties, when flappers, radio and the Art Deco movement defined the era.
The idea for the Heidelberg Hotel began in 1927, when architect Edward Neild sketched on a napkin a luxury hotel that had no official plans in Louisiana’s capital. In 1928, Huey P. Long was elected governor, making him one of the state’s most colorful figures. In the 1930s, Long oversaw the construction of the new State Capitol building four blocks from the Heidelberg Hotel. Among its distinguishing features was the fact that it is the highest capital of the country. In 1931, Heidelberg itself served as the Louisiana Capitol during the debate between Long and Governor General Paul Cyr. Long, the newly elected senator, refused to relinquish his duties as governor, and Cyr organized work at the hotel. Long died an unexpected and suspicious death in 1935 when he was assassinated in the lobby of the Capitol building. Many of the events surrounding his death have never been explained, and rumors persist to this day, particularly about Long’s famous “drawing box,” an archive of political favors.
In 1931, the hotel was briefly used as the Louisiana state seat during a power struggle between Governor Huey P. Long and Lt. Governor Paul Cyr. Cyr called the hotel the Louisiana Capital when Long refused to hand over power after winning the United States Senate.

Received the Brick and Mortar Award from the Historic Louisiana Foundation. In 2006, after a renovation costing more than $70 million, the old Heidelberg Hilton was reborn as the Baton Rouge Capitol Center Hotel. Contemporary renovations, sophisticated amenities, a beautiful restaurant and lounge, and a gym breathe new life into this historic hotel.
