Community First Credit Union and Blue Zones create a financial protection program that is used as a key component in improving community well-being. The program offers specific financial security solutions to address opportunities identified in the first year of the Blue Zones project. As part of its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, Community First also examines local practices and policies to encourage a better understanding of how to serve everyone and remove invisible barriers to financial success.

While other financial institutions support Blue Zone’s work in other cities, Community First will take the lead in establishing a community-centered financial program along with other services and products. The Financial Protection Pilot Program will launch in 2024 with other organizations for greater collective impact.

The Blue Zone Project takes a local approach to improving the health of cities and communities as a whole, making lasting changes to the city’s built environment, policies and social networks to facilitate healthy choices wherever people live, work, learn and have fun. Research shows that health status and income status are closely related, so improving the financial well-being of Jacksonville residents can help address changes in well-being.

“We are delighted to have a valued and visionary financial partner in Jacksonville, Community First, on board. We are working together to lead a new financial pilot program that aims to improve the financial health of Jacksonville residents,” said Ben Liddle, CEO of Blue Zone and founder of the Zona Azul Project.

There is no shortage of banks in Lexington, but one type of financial institution is missing in the city: the credit union.

DuPont Community Credit Union, or DCCU, will open a “Lexington Member Center” on Thursday. The facility – located on Route 11, north of I-64 – will mark the Waynesboro credit union’s 12th branch.

Nick Martino, manager of the Lexington “Member Center” branch, said the credit union decided to open a branch after receiving positive feedback from members in the area.

“We solicited feedback from our members through surveys and conducted some surveys asking them to locate a branch in Rockbridge County,” Martino said. “We decided, based on enough member input, that this is a market we want to address.”

The new facility is 4,200 square feet and includes a drive-thru ATM. Martino said the DCCU took control of the property before construction of the center began in May. Now, six months later, he’s ready to go. The branch is opening ahead of schedule and the financial market in Rockbridge County is preparing for more competition.

On Monday, a sign will be placed at the center’s entrance to officially welcome customers. During the first week of operation, the credit union will offer extended hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Normal opening hours will resume next week, from 9am to 5:30pm. Monday to Thursday and from 9am to 6pm on Friday.

“I have high hopes for (the Lexington Member Center) from any interest we have received from the community,” Martino said. “Wherever we go, whether we go for lunch or shopping, people take us aside because they see the logo on the shirt. They’ve been asking about the credit union when we opened and asked, so I’m hoping it’s a very successful and quick move forward.

Credit union membership has increased in recent years, according to a report released in October by CUNA Mutual Group, an insurance company that serves the credit union industry. As of August 2015, 104.3 million Americans were members of a credit union, a 6% increase from two years ago.

Banks are professional organizations loyal to their shareholders, while credit unions are non-profit organizations. Their income is returned to members through higher income and lower interest rates on loans. This benefit encourages some consumers to leave their banks and open accounts with credit unions.

During the week of November 9, for example, DuPont charged 1.79% for new loans, compared to Wells Fargo’s rate of 3.12%. And according to the National Credit Union Administration, which regulates credit unions, the average interest rate on a four-year deposit guarantee this fall was 1.18 percent, compared with 0.97 percent a year ago.
