That was until we learned of a small area in Southeast Florida where these large imports were growing rapidly. Introduced in the 1980s by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission as a way to control the Mayan cichlid population, this omnivorous exotic species thrives in warm, sunny conditions year-round along with many other species including the midas cichlid, oscar, and jaguar guabot (tiger bass). , snakehead fish, and clown knife fish. Because they cannot tolerate high salinity and water temperatures below 62 degrees, the peacock’s range is geographically limited to urban canal systems throughout the southeastern region of the state.
The cool, tropical climate of Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties is similar to the peacock’s native habitat in Brazil. Broward and Miami-Dade are considered the heart of peacock country, but after several years of mild winters, large numbers have migrated north to the Palm Beach County chain of lakes. Connecting West Palm’s Pine Lake to the south via Clark Lake, Lake Osborne, and Eden Lake, and ending at Lake Ida near Delray Beach, this 30-mile chain is also known for producing large largemouth bass. This area is usually considered the northern end of the peacock’s range, and is a major crossroads for targeting both species. Each lake in the chain is divided into hundreds of residential canals that are home to peacocks, and contains a deep linear basin called the West Palm Beach Channel that runs north and south. The sediment left over from its construction forms ripples on the bottom that attract largemouth year-round.
