Lake View Campground is the hub of two campgrounds within Cave Lake State Park. Away from the park use area and the area along Cave Lake, Lake View is the busiest of the two campgrounds.

Bird Creek Campground
Each site has a picnic table, grill and fire pit. A large modern central bathroom with sink, shower and flush toilets serves the campsite, with taps located around the campsite providing water all year round. Campgrounds are open year-round, although weather conditions may affect locations and activities. Sites are available for $15 per night. There is a seven-day limit for a 30-day period. Page #30 is ADA friendly. The dump is located outside the Elk Flats Campground.
While hiking, boating, fishing, and swimming are common summer activities in the park, water skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and water skiing can be seen above the ice during the winter season. The nearest grocery store is in Ely, 15 miles away. This was our first stay at a KOA (Campgrounds of America). We drove the historic Highway 50, part of “America’s Loneliest Road,” from Reno, Nevada to Ely (pronounced E-Le), Nevada. Part of the trail is part of the Pony Express National Historic Trail. *Remind me when I have more wall space and want to get a map.
At 6,437 meters above sea level, it is the highest point we have been to. Maybe that’s why I’m so tired all of a sudden! E also had trouble riding a mountain bike. Paradise, California is 2,000 feet above sea level, so we got used to it. When we visited places at 4506 feet (Reno, NV) or 4802 (Carson City, NV), we saw no signs. Those extra thousand feet seem to make all the difference!
This KOA had a large playground with tetherball, basketball, horseshoes, monkey bars and swings. It was a beautiful place nestled in the mountains and we enjoyed the beautiful view.
Things To Do In Ely
My biggest complaint about this place was that on 2 different days I tried to use the restroom and the time it temporarily didn’t work. Luckily there is a good laundromat in Ely, but my favorite is the on-site laundromat. It’s no big deal, just annoying.
The kids and I took another train ride to the Northern Nevada Railroad Museum. Children from Monday to Thursday free! Our passenger car was pulled by an old steam locomotive from 1910.
I wanted to take a photo in one of the old photo booths I’ve seen in some of the western tourist spots we’ve been to. You know, the place where you dress up in old western clothes and have your picture taken in front of an old western. My sisters, two brothers, and I have already done this in Old Town Sacramento, California. But we never did it because there are many other things and women are the ones who want to do it. So today I bought some engineering hats for the kids and took some photos of me old-fashioned with my iPhone. Obviously the B shades and logo tees don’t look authentic, other than that the pictures turned out great.
I found 2 new train books that I want to check out. I haven’t read any of them, so I can’t give my opinion yet. I will let you know as soon as I receive the mail and order from Amazon…
