The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the City of San Antonio are accelerating an initiative that could make flights to and from San Antonio more direct for business travelers.

The council posted a survey on its website, asking members and partners about their business air travel habits and, in particular, seeking feedback on business travel to and from Boston Logan International Airport . Travelers to that city must now connect to Dallas, Houston or use a Jet Blue flight from Austin.

If the city and council can demonstrate sufficient traffic between the two cities, officials believe one or more airlines will establish daily nonstop service. There are currently 35 cities with direct daily service to and from San Antonio International Airport. Direct service to Miami, New Orleans and Cancun was added this year. Five cities are in Mexico.
San Antonio offers fewer nonstop daily destinations than Dallas, Houston or Austin, and travelers who live in San Antonio often mention New York LaGuardia, Washington Reagan and Boston Logan as three destinations they wish to serve with direct daily flights.
Richard Perez, president and CEO of the San Antonio Council, said his organization’s partnership with the city is a long-term, sustainable effort to increase the number of direct air routes.

“How do you do that?” He asked rhetorically. “We’re just asking people who fly for business where they’re going, how often and what’s coming from there,” he said. “Our analysis of this data will help us move forward.”
According to Perez, the lack of such airlines, or elevators, to and from San Antonio hinders growth and important industries, including health care, biotechnology, information technology (IT) and aerospace. Direct flights also make San Antonio an attractive tourist destination and a very attractive location for meetings and conferences, he said. Perez said all types of transportation to and from the city affect business activity
Why Boston? Perez said Boston’s growing biotech and healthcare sectors, and concentration of top colleges and universities, make it a “natural connection” to San Antonio.
“It makes sense to look at Boston first. They have many businesses there similar to ours in healthcare and biotech,” said Perez. “They have a talented, locally produced workforce and capital.”

“How much does your employee travel between San Antonio and Boston each year?” and “When you travel to Boston, does your company usually fly with a particular airline?” are among the survey questions. The survey also asked whether business travelers used other modes of transportation to get to other regional airports and fly to Boston, a question that appears to gauge how many San Antonians travel to Austin to catch a flight not stopping in Boston.
The survey also asked whether business travelers would be more likely to fly to Boston if San Antonio offered nonstop service.
Frank Miller, director of the San Antonio Department of Aviation, expressed his appreciation for the office’s efforts and thought it was good that the airline provided good information.
“It’s very important to get broad input from the business community. Airlines will look very carefully at their level of involvement here,” Miller said.

Miller said he and his colleagues typically attend meetings with airline officials twice a year to discuss strengthening air service. During these meetings representatives from each aviation department expressed the value of their city as a specific category of destination. Miller joked that it was “speed dating, but on an airline.”

“We’ve gotten into an environment where we sit down with the airlines and let them see the possibilities of flights and specific cities,” Miller said. He added that the idea is to identify patterns and needs in what he calls traffic-based traffic, which provides valuable information to airlines. If the air carrier sees potential in the city, a follow-up meeting is held between the carrier and the city at the office of the interested company.
Miller said the air travel habits and habits of airlines and travelers change from time to time, and it’s important that the city and its aviation department adapt to those changes, which could lead to the development of new route or additional service to existing destinations.

The availability of direct daily flights is an attraction that grows stronger every year as consumers seek to reduce travel costs and time. Flight update app FlightView recently surveyed more than 2,300 travelers. 70% of respondents said they would pay more for a direct flight. 1/3 of these people said they would pay 16% more than the original ticket price to avoid cancellation.
“We need to have incentives to attract these routes, so we need a lot of help and support from the business community,” said Perez. “This is intended to show other airlines and cities how committed we are.”
“Airlines are always looking for incentives,” Miller added. “They’re also looking at the community and how it can support the new direct route, the people involved. That’s why the cooperation of the city and this office is so important.”
American Airlines added daily direct service to and from Miami in March. A month later, Southwest Airlines began direct daily flights to and from New Orleans. Alaska Airlines helps make Seattle a direct destination. Mexican airlines Volaris and Interjet are important for landing direct flights to and from Mexico City.
Is Nonstop Service To Boston Next For Sat?
Perez said it’s important for airlines to see the many investments the city is making at the airport, including a nearby rental facility currently under construction. The airport opened Terminal B in 2010 and renovated Terminal A in 2014, creating more rooms. For new baggage handling facilities and more personal providers to serve travelers. Added new restaurants, retail space and renovated bathrooms.
“There’s good momentum with San Antonio International Airport, but when you reach a milestone, you don’t stop there. You keep progressing,” Perez said.
