Brooklyn Prospect Charter School (BPCS) is a community of six high-performing schools with plans to expand. The network’s mission is to increase access to quality education as an integral part of community development. BPCS is providing a $12 million loan for the renovation of a building that will become the permanent home of the International Primary School (IES). The school, which is currently attached to another BPCS site, will move to a former archival school building located a mile away from BPCS Secondary School, where students attend to complete IES.

By the time Ascend students enter secondary school, they have acquired the academic skills, critical thinking skills, intellectual capacity and commitment to school to participate in an engaging course of study.
Middle school builds on the humanities literacy program of the lower school. Its main objectives are cultural literacy, critical thinking, writing, and close reading. Our curriculum broadens students’ understanding of the world and their place in it. As students engage with readers who explore life outside of our Brooklyn middle school, they also look to literature that reflects the New York culture and society they know.
Our science program combines experiential, project-based learning and engaging texts. Students continually develop as scientific thinkers as they work to “form” rather than “learn” relevant and meaningful real-world concepts. Through this process, students are empowered as scientists and practitioners equipped with skills that reflect the skills of professional scientists and engineers.
Students explore big ideas in the life sciences, earth sciences, and physical sciences. Additionally, eighth-graders can earn High School Regents credit through the Living Environment course. For this credit, students complete at least 1,200 minutes of hands-on laboratory experience. Brooklyn Prospect Charter School has two middle schools, both currently located in District 13. The permanent one is located in Clinton Hill and the temporary one is in Downtown Brooklyn. It will move to a new school building in Goons District 15 for the 2023 school year. “Windsor Terrace Middle School” is currently located at 40 Flatbush Avenue Extension in Brooklyn, with 324 students in grades 6 through 8, with 4 sections per classroom. Subject areas include ELA, math, science, music theater, humanities, PT, and world languages.

Students do not study a foreign language in sixth grade, but work in a small reading group. All other students study Spanish for half a school year, Mandarin for half a school year, and then decide which language they want to study in 7th and 8th grade.
Lunch and recess are 53 minutes long and are supervised outside in a nearby park, weather permitting. School hours for Grade 6 students are 3 days a week from 8.15am to 4pm and 2 days a week from 8.15am to 3pm. Homework is approximately 20 minutes for each major subject and 10 minutes for subjects such as Spanish. The Brooklyn Prospect Charter School Network offers free education in grades K through 12 to more than 1,500 students throughout Brooklyn. Prospect School, an international IB school, bases its curriculum on the prestigious International Baccalaureate program.
The new middle school in Gowanus will be a 7-story, 30,000-square-foot building that will include large common and open spaces, a gym and a library. In addition to traditional classrooms, the building will also include music and art studios, science laboratories and special reading rooms. The school plans to move there by 2023.
