Practice With The Los Angeles Sparks: Youth Skill Development Coaches Clinic
Sparks players weren’t smiling Thursday while posing for photos at the team’s annual media day. They marveled at the professionalism and new camaraderie the franchise had forged with the group of first-year general manager Karen Bryant and head coach Curt Miller.
After organizing their practice schedule by hunting for open practice courts in the Lakers’ gyms, campuses and facilities, the Sparks will call El Camino College their permanent practice home this year. For any issue, from housing to questions about medical staff, the team will provide immediate support, said free agent striker Azurá Stevens. Most of the players arrived in L.A before the season and helped the team develop chemistry on and off the court.
“It was a complete 180 from last year,” said Sparks sophomore guard Jorder Canada. “You just feel like there’s a different environment, a different atmosphere in the locker room. … Everyone on this team wants to see everyone succeed and do well, encourage each other, push each other, hold each other accountable. That’s what we lacked last year: accountability.”
Canada believed in Bryant and Miller’s vision so much that the five-year pro chose to return to his hometown team on a non-guaranteed training camp deal, one year after signing as a coveted free agent in Seattle. She’s playing in what Layshia Clarendon calls “the best point guard camp I’ve ever been to.”

The Sparks opened training camp on Sunday with a new coach and operations staff and plenty of questions about their potential and learning curve.
Clarendon, a 32-year-old former University of California star now playing in his sixth WNBA, provided a veteran voice in a tough matchup with Chelsea Gray. Canada paced the team and tested their teammates in transition drills. Connecticut midfielder Jasmine Thomas is participating in practice after missing last year while recovering from a torn ACL, but did not provide an exact timetable for her return as the team prepares to open the season on the field home on May 19 compared to the Phoenix Mercury.
Newcomers Zia Cooke and Yang Liwei are also looking for coveted art venues. Cooke, the Sparks’ top pick last month, is working at both guards. Yang, 28, helped China win silver at last year’s FIBA Women’s World Cup and played two seasons in China with Sparks star Nneka Ogwumike.
“For me, there’s no difference playing in the United States because [I] just play basketball on the other side of the world,” Yang said through an interpreter. “Professionalism is my job everywhere.”

During his first WNBA experience, Yang was impressed by Miller’s commitment to building a strong culture with the Sparks.
Miller and Bryant avoided any explicit discussion of Thursday’s championship game, choosing instead to repeat the mantra of building sustainable success one day at a time. However, Man City fans may have lost patience. The Sparks’ 25 wins over the past two seasons are the fewest in a two-year period in franchise history.
Despite his recent struggles, Stevens, a highly-rated free agent forward from Chicago, enthusiastically signed with the rebuilding Sparks. She hopes fans will do the same.
“Fans have to be loyal whether we win or lose,” Stevens said. Because when we win the chip and you’re not loyal, I don’t want to hear anything from you.
