Greetings to everyone! Thanks for joining me on my last visit to Old Car City. In the video, I shot vintage cars and trucks both digitally and on film, but the video focuses on the cinematic aspect of my day. I was blessed with great light – which to me means overcast skies lead to soft light. Since the location is in a pine forest, direct sunlight causes harsh shadows, resulting in a completely different shooting experience and very different final images.
Generation 4×4: Why Vintage Trucks Will Rule The Collector Car World
I chose to shoot on Cinestill Double-X film because it gives great dramatic contrast, fine grain and ultra-sharp results without looking clinical like digital images can sometimes appear.
Cinestill Double-X black and white film is rated at 250 ISO film in daylight or 200 ISO film in incandescent light.
Cinestill Double-X is a repackaged version of Kodak EASTMAN DOUBLE-X film 5222. The same black-and-white film that Kodak has been making since the 1950s in some of the best black-and-white movies of all time, including The Lighthouse, Crazy. Bull, Schindler’s List, Memento, Kill Bill: Vol. . 1, Manhattan and Young Frankenstein.
In this behind-the-scenes photo on location, the Hasselblad 500C/M is used to shoot one of the vintage trucks.

I am not affiliated with Old Car City USA other than I have been a paying customer a few times. It is an old landfill that opened in 1931 and no longer handles garbage, but later opened its grounds to photographers and other visitors for a fee. It is owned by the same family and according to their website, it is the largest known classic car junkyard.
The plot is huge, winding through pine forests. The owner once told me that photographers often spend their entire vacation at the dump, returning each day to photograph different parts of the site.
This is a 7 inch proof on Hahnemuhle Photorag Baryta, one of my favorite fine art photo papers. It is made of a cotton backing with a barite coating on the print side. Acid-free, free of optical brighteners, museum quality.
