There are no international flights.
The 2,600-acre airport campus includes two runways, 46 buildings, 7 parking lots and an airfield. Six commercial airlines offer service from DSM (American, Allegiant, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, and United). The airport is operated by the Des Moines Airport Authority.
In the 1920s, there were several small general aviation and airmail airports in the Des Moines area. In 1929, the Iowa General Assembly passed legislation allowing cities to sell bonds and collect taxes to build municipal airports. More than 80 sites for the Des Moines airport were considered before it was decided to build on 160 acres (0.65 km²) of farmland south of the city. Construction of the airport began in 1932 and was completed in 1933. The airport’s first passenger terminal was built shortly after the airport was completed. In 1950, it was replaced by a new center, which was expanded and renovated several times. The publishing rooms were built in 1970, together with the transformation of the terminal.
The airport was originally operated by the City of Des Moines Parks Department. The city established a separate aviation department in 1960 and a separate aviation policy advisory board in 1982. The airport was raided at Des Moines International Airport in 1986 to alert United States Customs about the airport.

In 2011, the City of Des Moines transferred control of the city to the Des Moines Airport Authority. The city retains ownership of the land, but transfers ownership of all buildings and equipment to government agencies. However, the authorities agreed to lease the land for 99 years.

It included new carpets, paint, door panels, seats, a new ceiling, signage and a fire suppression system. This development also included an interoperability project that allowed any airline to use any gate at the airport. A new bathroom was added to Hall C to allow for future hall expansion. The airport has also improved baggage handling capacity with expanded handling facilities.

In 2022 and 2023, the airport is undergoing significant construction, which means a complete reconstruction of the runway on 23.05 and ongoing construction (from 14.09.2023), which will also have to be closed on 13.31.
In April 2022, Des Moines International Airport released its Terminal Study calling for a new terminal building to replace the current terminal. The old plans reduced the airport’s capacity to 17 gates, 5 more than the current terminal plans. The new plan calls for at least 18 exits, which could be expanded to 22 exits and 5 additional parking spaces for commercial aircraft, and the project is being built in phases to keep costs down. This program also includes US Customs and Border Protection so that the airport can handle international passengers.
In May, the airport asked surrounding cities and counties to contribute more than $2 million to the airport’s expansion plans.
Work on the new terminal project will begin in 2024 at an estimated cost of $769 million.
