Many businesses and financial institutions were forced to close immediately during the COVID-19 pandemic, often putting people in dire straits. With stores closed, many people cannot access the financial services they need to stay afloat during the crisis.

However, this is not the case for Financial Plus Credit Union members. In times of stress from the crisis, the credit union has focused on digital outreach and education, as well as community service through charity and volunteer work.

Through its efforts, Financial Plus Credit Union has helped members and communities stay safe and secure during times of crisis without burdening them with unnecessary debt. The goal is to help them “start 2021 off on the right foot,” said Megan Stelter, director of marketing at Financial Plus Credit Union.

Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the credit union serves the community with four locations – West Des Moines, Euclid Avenue, Fleur Drive and Ingersoll. It manages more than $200 million in assets for more than 14,000 members and has more than 90 years of experience helping people manage their money and achieve their financial goals.

“Some of our management team have worked for the credit union for more than 25 years,” Stelter said. “We know the members by name, we know their stories. We pride ourselves on not only listening to their financial situation, but also learning about their lives and helping them if they are facing financial problems.

Just as the COVID-19 pandemic began, Financial Plus Credit Union began its website redesign. The new stable platform ensures that members manage their money and accounts even if they cannot go to the physical location. Instead, they can contact the insured credit union via email and live web chat.

“It’s a great opportunity because it’s another way members can retain us if they can’t get to a branch,” Stelter said. “They can send letters to all the branches and it will come to a platform where someone can get back to them online.”

In fact, Financial Plus Credit Union wants to make sure everyone has access to remote services, even if they’re not part of the smart crowd. Staff helped many members over the phone step by step through the new digital system.

“We help members by writing, web chat and phone to make sure they have access to us outside of driving or visiting a branch,” Stelter said.

While a learning curve was to be expected, the response was better than expected. Some people had trouble with the new system, but the staff helped them get used to it in no time.

“It’s different and exciting, so of course questions are called for,” Stelter said. “But we got less than we thought, which is good. It shows us that the site is easy to navigate, which is the point.

Financial Plus Credit Union’s new learning app is another way the credit union is using technology to benefit its members. Members have direct control over their accounts through a redesigned website. They also have access to tips on how to manage money effectively through the app.

“We’ve been looking for financial literacy tools for some time. Some of them are aimed at college-age students,” said Stelter. “We want to focus more on young students, giving them financial knowledge before college when they start making financial decisions.”

Financial Plus Credit Union partnered with Zogo to bring the app to life and make the credit union service available to everyone in their zip code. It helps users learn about various financial knowledge through quizzes and they can get rewards including gift cards for completing the formula.

Financial Plus Credit Union helps prevent consumer debt on multiple fronts by helping consumers learn how to better manage their money.

“We’re promoting this to our members and we want to use it to go into schools and teach students about financial literacy,” Stelter said. “With an app and the opportunity to win prizes, we hope these students will find it a useful and fun way to learn.”

In addition to serving members, Financial Plus Credit Union makes it a point to give back to its community. It aims to increase access to the needs of local communities and promote greater financial security and independence.

One way the credit union does that is with its annual winter clothing drive, which collects coats, gloves and hats for Des Moines Public Schools. This year alone, 57 coats, 24 hats and 30 pairs of gloves were donated to needy children.

In addition, this year’s school donation to iIt Des Moines Public Schools provided more than 10,000 items to schools in need. It will serve more than 3,000 students and teachers at six schools in the district this school year. Donations are spread across the spectrum and include “swimming chairs” to accommodate elementary school students in the age of COVID-19. Other donations include hundreds of bottles of hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies, as well as many much-needed school supplies for low-income children in the community.

The credit union supports local public schools through fundraising, including donations to the PTO and funding for annual events. As they do with consumers, these efforts help government agencies avoid borrowing money to access the goods and services they need.

Financial Plus Credit Union partners with other organizations outside of its annual events and functions. In 2020, he hosted a luncheon for all the floors and nurses of the local children’s hospital as a way to thank them for their work during difficult times. The purpose of the credit union is to take care of today’s needs so that people in the community can focus on work and education and improve their financial situation without the unnecessary step of debt.

Financial Plus Credit Union serves the Des Moines area, but its efforts to help members extend across the country. That’s why it created an extensive ATM system that covers more than 30,000 machines in the United States. That’s good news as the economy continues to recover and people are around and starting to travel again for business and pleasure.

“We are the first credit union in Iowa to work with CO-OPs at their ATMs with no additional fees,” Stelter said. “There are more than 30,000 ATMs across the country and our members now have access to our state-of-the-art SHAZAM ATM network.”

In addition to being available throughout the country, access to these ATMs is also free. So wherever they travel, or for whatever reason, members can withdraw money when they want without excessive withdrawal fees.
