“Traditionally, applying for a trademark has been a complicated and time-consuming process for business owners,” says Soh Chee King, who works at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) as a business analyst for the IPOS GO project. “There is already an e-service website, but there are several steps that must be completed before a successful trademark application can be submitted. Even with the guidance of consultants, it is easy for first-time applicants to complete a trademark application,” says Chi Qing. It takes up to an hour.

Took Very Long Time To Load The File

To address this issue, an interagency team of IPOS and government staff decided to simplify the intellectual property (IP) registration process. The team envisioned a platform that would allow business owners to transact IP as easily as they transact online on Amazon.

“In a world where customers are faced with competing choices and offers, strong brands have become a core value proposition,” said Lee Won Seng, Government Services Group and Project Manager, iPOS Go. Registering trademarks through the program saves time, effort and money, allowing business owners to focus on brand development.

The iPOS Go app has many innovative features. “We thought it would be great if this app allowed people to register trademarks by taking a photo and sending it on the go,” says Hazel Moy, who leads the government team as IT manager at IPOS. . With this in mind, the team has integrated the Similar Mark Search feature as part of the iPOS Go app. Based on artificial intelligence and image recognition technology, this feature allows users to submit a logo or photo and search for similar trademarks based on the image. A smart feature scans the submitted image and searches for similar existing trademarks. “This feature allows applicants to overcome potential objections from similar existing trademarks before filing. This gives applicants an opportunity to redesign their trademarks,” explains Chi King.

The challenge was to translate and streamline the process from the app’s existing website to a mobile app. “No one typically expects to spend more than 15 minutes transacting on a mobile app,” says Hazel.

Ipos Simplified The Trademarks Filing Process

The ultimate goal was to develop a simple mobile application that even a common man could use effectively. To do this, the team must first understand their end users. In their quest to transform the trademark application process, the team adopted an agile, product-focused development approach and iteratively tested multiple user interface designs and prototypes. User testing provided the team with important insights into what a good branding program should include.

“We have taken many of the complex legal and legal terms into the existing application form and simplified the number of fields,” says Van Seng. The team worked to break down the application process into smaller logical chunks and created progress indicators that would guide and improve user experience and navigation. The IPOS team rewrote most of the rules in plain language and removed unnecessary sections and steps to reduce complexity.

Ready, Launch, IPOS Go! In line with Singapore’s Smart Country initiative, transforming Singapore’s trademark application process into IPOS Go is part of IPOS’ aim to deliver digital innovation to better serve citizens and businesses. In the first three months after launch, the iPOS Go app has been downloaded over 2,600 times and has received positive feedback from industry and businesses.

“Based on the number of applications registered in the first month, iPOS GO has improved the user experience for business owners by allowing them to apply for their trademarks directly on iPOS,” said Chi King. The team also hopes to introduce more useful features such as recovery to the app in the future.
