With Delta Dental in Iowa’s goal of being an energy efficient/sustainable organization, Baker Group designed and built one of the most efficient HVAC projects in the area. Along with the rest of the design team, Baker Group used a geothermal heat pump system and an outdoor air thermal ventilation unit. The landscape system, combined with increased glass efficiency to reduce heating and cooling loads, means Delta Dental’s new building in Iowa will use more than 40% less energy than the ASHRAE baseline. Tim Baker was asked to build a thermally efficient structure that was integrated into a building with a large amount of roof space. This required a high level of coordination and advance planning with all members of the design team. The accelerated schedule required the design and installation of geothermal systems for the winter of 2009/2010. Iowa-based Delta Dental moved its corporate headquarters to a new office building in a highly visible location along Interstate 80. Company management chose this location with the intent that the building itself would be will be an economic symbol and an advertising tool – or advertising structure – aimed directly at the millions of drivers who travel through these regions every week.

The center is located in a park on the outskirts of the city with a branched network of walkways and is near a picturesque lake. The new office building was designed to be energy efficient, flexible and expandable. It is programmatically organized in two parts. One is the executive wing, which contains private offices, a large meeting room and a staff lounge/training room. The second floor houses open offices, private administrative offices, conference rooms and support areas. Both parts are clearly defined and connected by a page that appeals to the everyday masses. Also connecting parts of the program is the backbone of the north-south cycle called “Superhighway”, because all important construction activities are located on this road.
The top of the building is connected to a terracotta rain glass system; chosen for its structure, speed of installation and visual warmth of the material. The size of the terracotta panels creates an organizational grid that runs throughout the building. Size became the driving force behind the proportions and rhythms used throughout the building, including twelve feet wide by fourteen feet. This part is repeated throughout the building, and depends on the function of the space behind the window module, the glazing between the sight glass and half-wing glass.
In the open office space, the entire window wall shows the landscape around the natural landscapes and the lake, while the private offices have the same view of the landscape that becomes the “art” of the room. The alternative form of lever and visual glass found on the exterior walls of private offices is transformed into interior design and visual architecture. This hard and low style is repeated in the interior offices that reach out to the landscape as formal rows of grass and dirty stone.
The south face, towards the area of the cross, acts like a sunburst. This screen extends from the ground to the height of the snow, protecting the interior office space from the sun’s heat and glare while providing daylight. This approach also includes a branding tool where the company logo becomes a high-level graphic in the country, fulfilling the mission of this company.
