Two New Mental Health Facilities Are Coming To Central Iowa
Our program strives to provide residents with rigorous scholarly activities, research, clinical training, and a well-rounded emergency medicine practice in a community setting.
Health – Des Moines is excited to introduce a new emergency medicine residency program. It will be a three-year program with six residents per year. Rotations will include Adult Emergency, Pediatric Emergency, Critical Care, Level 1 Trauma Surgery. Primary rotations will occur primarily at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Blank Children’s Hospital in Health – Des Moines. The program was recently accredited by the ACGME and is funded and committed to our emergency medicine physicians and hospital administration.
Dr. Whittaker grew up in Omaha, NE and received his medical education at Creighton University School of Medicine. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Indiana University and served as chief resident. With a strong interest in medical education, Nash earned a bachelor’s degree in medical education from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Kelly School of Business. Prior to joining Health as program director for the new emergency medicine residency, Nash held leadership positions in medical education and administration. His professional interests include medical education, quality improvement processes and team building. Nash enjoys hunting, fishing and competitive skeet shooting. He spends most Saturdays in the fall watching Nebraska football games. He enjoys traveling the world with his fiancee Kelsey and rarely goes anywhere without his English yellow lab, Winston.
Dr. Klusner majored in biology and philosophy at the University of Notre Dame in 2008. He attended medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine—graduating with honors in service and global health—and also interned at hospitals and clinics in Iowa, where he worked as a resident. He is the Vice Chair of the Legal and Ethics Committee of the Iowa Medical Society and a member of the ACEP National Ethics Committee. Along with the clinical work and leadership in the emergency medicine specialty program, Dr. Klusner also serves as assistant medical director in the emergency department. His professional interests include medical ethics, humanities, medical education and interdisciplinary process improvement. He likes to spend time with his wife and four children in the pleasant family atmosphere of Des Moines, where he has lived since 2015. This includes mostly outdoor activities, woodworking projects, and gatherings around the grill. Friends know him as an avid Notre Dame fan.
Community Based Obstetrics Rotation
Dr. Janet graduated from Iowa State University in 2010 with a BA in Biochemistry. In 2014, he attended medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. After medical school, he completed his emergency medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin, where he served as chief resident. After specialization Dr. Janet received a helicopter ambulance scholarship and worked as a physician at the University of Wisconsin. In addition to her clinical work and role as Associate Program Director in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program, Dr. Janet Osceola as Medical Director of the Fire EMS Department. His professional interests include HEMS, emergency respiratory care, and prehospital medicine with an emphasis on medical education. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, living south of Des Moines in Norwalk. In his spare time, his hobbies include electronics prototyping, 3D printing, and Iowa State athletics.
Dr. Hawthorne graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in physics in 2005. He attended medical school at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed his residency at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN before starting the Health program in 2012. As of 2019, he serves as the Medical Director of the Arogya Emergency Medicine Clinic – DES. Moines and previously was assistant medical director for three years. Dr. Hawthorne is the founder of the Des Moines Emergency Ultrasound Conference and serves on the planning committee. His professional interests include point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), stroke, change implementation, and utilization analysis to achieve cost-effective care. He enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, gardening/yards, vacationing in northern Minnesota, every kind of lakeside activity you can think of, and soccer.
Dr. Raised in Johnston, Iowa, Stocker took an unconventional path to medicine. He originally attended DMACC where he earned an Associates Degree in Automotive Science. He then began driving a truck while attending college and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in applied studies from the University of Iowa. He attended medical school at Des Moines University and continued his pediatric residency at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. He and his family then moved to Kansas City, where he completed a residency in pediatric emergency medicine at Children’s Mercy Hospital, where he served as chief educator. He returned to practice at Blank Children’s in their emergency department. His professional interests include medical assistance and simulation. When he is not working, he spends time with his wife and six children.
Dr. Jensen received her bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University in 2008, graduating as a senior with a major in biological and animal sciences. She attended medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and graduated with honors. Brittany completed her residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she served as Chief Resident. Her professional interests include global health (especially East Africa), medical education and interdisciplinary process improvement. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter (usually fishing or camping), traveling, and visiting her family on the East Coast.
