Mercy West Des Moines Iowa – MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center, the first hospital in Iowa to achieve LEED® certification for new construction, is seen as a modern, efficient option in the heart of the busy Clive, Iowa health campus. The facility is adjacent to the MercyOne-designed Health and Fitness Center.
Using evidence-based design, the team created a model emergency department center, separating operational and support traffic from the patient area, promoting patient privacy, and creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for all. This center is one of the first to implement a hybrid distributed nursing station model that combines the efficiency and security of a decentralized station with the communication and social benefits of a central station.

Emergency access hospitals, tasked with providing emergency hospital services to rural populations, face unique challenges while serving their communities.
No two health clinics are the same, they all serve different populations and vary in size and function.
Architecture and design are critical elements to ensure critical access hospitals meet funding criteria as well as the needs of their staff and patients.
For this episode of Side of Design, we spoke to some talented healthcare designers to learn about this incredibly important role.
Iowa Hospital Ratings Are Updated, But Offer Conflicting Guidance To Consumers • Iowa Capital Dispatch
Great healthcare doesn’t happen by accident. It is the result of diligence and innovation – and that is more important than knowledge and kindness. Area 239,000 sqft. The 7-story building is a combination of interior design that focuses on architectural and functional features that aim to reduce the hospital’s impact on the environment. Large windows allow natural light into the hospital, which clinical studies show promotes healing and helps reduce energy costs. Special sensors turn off lights in areas where they are not needed, and special water flow technology reduces water consumption by 21%.
The Western Lakes site is the second phase of the proposed medical campus. As ASI successfully designed and installed a complete signage solution for the East Tower, known as Mercy Medical Center, hospital management asked ASI to develop a solution for the West Lake location. The sign design must work with an environment that aims to heal and complement the new architectural design, while appearing as an extension of the East Tower sign solution located throughout the city. In addition to the design challenges, finding solutions for internal signage to guide and move patients and staff as they travel between the medical office building and the new West Lakes facility.
After inspecting the site and confirming the layout and messaging for the interior and exterior solutions, ASI began the design process. Based on the East Tower design, ASI has developed color and material solutions that complement the treatment-oriented environment and complement the architectural features. The standard interior solution is built on a matte acrylic base with solid wood accent strips that form the vertical grid. To make the solution modular, ASI introduced its Infinity™ signage system, which allows ADA graphics and panels to be easily updated if parts are moved in the future. Complete interior solutions including patient room tables, department and office tables, high table management, forecast table and study table.
ASI designed and installed dynamic digital information boards within the elevators and lobby areas to help patient staff learn about the current services Mercy Medical Center offers.

The custom exterior solution integrates Mercy’s brand identity, directs patients to the right location, and begins to integrate interior design patterns with surfaces that utilize black vinyl lines to create a grid. The complete system includes internally illuminated reminder signs, directional signs, and post signs. Each outdoor sign is color coded to ensure that patients looking for parking can follow the green sign message while passengers requiring emergency services can follow the red sign message .
For the large 5-layer cross restoration logo on the glass surface and the letters and logos mounted on the wall, ASI worked with a system of friendly partners to produce a smart and efficient solution that was satisfied everyone, including the CEO of the hospital and the contractor. . Materials and coatings required for each outdoor label must be able to withstand the harsh climate of the western region. In addition, the 5-story bridge presented several engineering and installation challenges that ASI overcame by pooling the resources of a team of solution partners.
