Phyllis holds a master’s and doctorate in nursing practice and has thrived in full-time leadership for 8 years. She served as Interim Vice President, Continuum of Care for 6 months in 2020. Colleagues describe her as a leader who reduces stress and creates an environment of innovation. She is always ready to listen to new ideas and is open to feedback. “Phyllis encouraged me to continue being a leader when I wanted to give up,” said Darla Biswas, RN, regional clinical practice consultant. “I feel inspired to be a better version of myself under her guidance.”

Michelle’s leadership at the Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center is based on humane caring theory and evidence-based practice. Michelle, who holds a PhD, is a role model, champion of innovation, compassionate mentor and courageous leader. Their assessment of home transition readiness is used in the rehabilitation center and internationally. Michelle’s leadership at the American Heart Association and the Rehabilitation Nurses Association has strengthened nursing and equity regionally, nationally, and internationally. Michelle is a past president of the Rehabilitation Nurses Association and this fall she will be inducted into the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Valerie began her career at Kaiser Permanente in the intensive care unit in 1990. She moved to the Cardiac Catology Laboratory and soon became a nurse and then manager. Under her leadership, San Jose Medical Center became the first non-surgical site in Northern California to be a drop-in center for patients with serious heart attacks. In 2018, she was instrumental in the state approval of San Jose Medical Center as an elective site for stenting in patients with blocked coronary arteries. Valerie’s humble, quiet, stellar and exemplary work behind the scenes has contributed to the success of the cardiology department over the past 20 years.

According to a colleague, “Vanessa has a pure and genuine heart that you can see and feel in the way she gives her talent, time and dedication to her colleagues, colleagues and patients.” Vanessa manages Virtual Care and is a trainer and consultant for Caritas to improve patient care. She has developed nursing tips that inspire staff to provide exceptional care. When she earns her doctorate in nursing in the fall, she will be able to observe ICU patient populations to anticipate and prepare for future changes in healthcare systems.

Over the past year, Zareen has shown exemplary leadership in the high-paced department, according to her manager Deepak Devasthali. As interim director of Fremont’s emergency department, Zareen supported 100 physicians and 250 staff. In that role, she implemented a number of measures that improved the member experience, including a 70% increase in hiring within 60 minutes. They introduced a comment card system to improve the patient experience; improves the time needed to bring patients to the ECG by 20%; and she worked with hospital leaders to reduce her assigned sleep time in the emergency room by 15 minutes.

Musetta’s passion for empowering others through education, opportunity and relationships led her to create Mi Futuro, an annual symposium for Latino high school students learning about healthcare careers. Mi Futuro, or My Future in English, offers healthcare professionals the opportunity to challenge young people to choose social connection as a healthy norm. It also offers the opportunity to reinvent meaning in daily patient care. As a Latina born to a mother on welfare who died when she was a teenager, Musetta understands the inequality that many poor young people face every day.

Not only is Vicki an excellent nurse, but she is also committed to her community, according to her manager, Henry Fahrner. Each year she coordinates the donations of 200 turkeys by Kaiser Permanente employees in St. Louis. For Christmas Vicki organizes a toy collection campaign for more than 1000 families. She embodies the words excellence and kindness. A fellow doctor said, “Vicki never knew how much her constant smile and positive attitude added to my joy of working in medicine. Her concern for others is genuine and I’m sure everyone she comes in contact with she thinks so.

Theresa is a call center nurse in San Jose, specializing in pediatrics. According to colleague Maria “Lupe” Fernandez, “Theresa is able to identify the needs of both pediatric patients and their families with excellent triage skills.” Honest and reliable, she is a person who listens with empathy to the parents of sick children, immediately gaining their trust by listening and reassuring them when they are worried. Before ending a counseling session, Theresa always checks that parents are happy with the care plan and tells them they can call at any time if anything changes.

“Annette is the most knowledgeable, kind and compassionate nurse you have ever worked with,” said Dr. Lisa Woll. Her colleagues say that Annette has a positive attitude and is always compassionate and completely caring. Annette led 2 special projects that brought great value and efficiency to the office. One is an incoming patient card that identifies the patient and their needs. Another is a patient treatment plan for unusual medications. She updates care plans so that all nurses and staff can be consulted on the correct way to handle or prepare medications.

“Lillian is an extraordinary nurse, colleague, leader and teammate,” said Marcie Coe, RN. “She practices nursing with a selfless passion that positively impacts all of her patients.” Lillian recently taught the team how to reduce surgical site infections in cesarean section patients and continues to be a valuable resource for those working in maternal and child health. “I had the opportunity to meet Lillian as a new employer many years ago, I learned so much from her, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside such an exceptional and caring nurse.”

Cheryl is dedicated to all of her patients, but she has found her calling in caring for cancer patients and administering chemotherapy. Cheryl is a certified oncology nurse practitioner and is involved in the development of education-related cancer care. Outside of work, Cheryl is a member of the Oncology Nurse Society and volunteers at the Art of Life Cancer Foundation, a survivorship organization for cancer patients and families. Cheryl’s experience as an oncology nurse makes her an excellent resource and support for her colleagues.

Having served in the United States Army for 8 years, Vance firmly believes in “leading from the front” and empowering personnel to provide excellent care first. Vance has worked tirelessly to make Sacramento Home Health a great place to work. Vance believes in her department, inspires colleagues to work as a team and teaches them to be professional and make an impact on patient satisfaction. “Vance is the most professional, inspiring, positive and consistent 5-star leader I have ever met in my 15 years of working,” said a colleague.

“Erin is an amazing nurse and she deserves this award,” said her colleague, Robyn Reince, RN. “We run the Northern California ALS Support Group and I am always impressed with how she makes patients feel heard and cared for as they navigate this terrible disease.” Erin has extensive experience in palliative care and hospice and is skilled in the art and science of administering medications and deep brain stimulators. Always an empathetic and pragmatic voice, she gently supports family members as they cope with their loved one’s illness.

Throughout Ana’s 14-year career at Kaiser Permanente, she has consistently demonstrated the highest level of courtesy and professionalism as a pediatric intensive care unit assistant. She is personable, caring and provides invaluable care to our patients, families and staff. Every time she completes a task, she goes above and beyond. For example, she always makes sure that the parents’ shower is ready for use and accompanies them there herself.
