The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Saturday on the northwest side of I-65 near mile marker 138 near the Greenville exit.

A total of 17 vehicles, including two commercial vehicles, were involved, seven of which caught fire, according to ALEA.

One of those vehicles was a wagon carrying eight children from the Tallapoosa County Girls Farm. The organization says its mission is to provide homes for “needy, neglected or abused school-age children in Alabama.”

Alabama Sheriff’s Youth Ranch General Manager Michael Smith said the children will return to the Gulf Coast in about a week.

A total of nine people were in the van, Smith said. The farm manager, the only survivor, is currently in a medical center in an unknown condition.

The names of the victims in the ranch wagon have not been released. ALEA’s statement says that the deceased had a 3-year-old child, an 8-year-old child, a 12-year-old child, a 14-year-old child, a 14-year-old child, a 15-year-old child, two. 16-year-old – 17-year-old and a 17-year-old – old. All were from Alabama and pronounced dead at the scene.

In the other car were the father and his daughter, who both died. State troopers and Garlock identified them as 29-year-old Cody Fox and 9-month-old Ariana Fox. They were from New Hope, Tennessee.

Fox’s death was also confirmed by the Marion County Emergency Management Agency in Tennessee, which said in a Facebook post: “Words cannot express my sadness upon hearing the news of the death of Cody and his daughter yesterday afternoon. Car accident in South Alabama. Cody .was an integral part of the EMA staff in Marion County, always ready, always willing to serve. His upbeat attitude, willingness to learn, and without a doubt, the most educated person I have ever known will be greatly missed. My deepest prayers go out to his parents and family. He was a dedicated first responder, a good son, a good brother, a good father and a good friend. I will miss him.”

Girls Farm in Tallapoosa County released a statement Saturday afternoon on social media saying, “our farm has suffered a great loss.”

Railtown High School also announced a vigil Sunday afternoon, “Due to the tragic events that occurred at our Railtown High School family, Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch… Please keep Tallapoosa Girls Ranch and the Railtown family in your prayers!

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but Garlock said Saturday’s weather and hydroplaning may have played a role.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced that it will coordinate with ALEA and send 10 investigators to investigate additional vehicle technologies such as crash prevention systems, CMV fuel tank integrity, driver operation and occupant survival.

“Yesterday was a tragic day for our state. My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives during the storm in Butler and Tuscaloosa counties. Let’s lift up those families, communities and first responders in prayer,” Kay Ivey tweeted. A 24-year-old and a 3-year-old died in Tuscaloosa County.

Senator Tommy Tuberville: “No words can comfort the families and loved ones of these children during this tragedy. My family, staff and the people of Alabama are praying for peace and comfort during this unimaginable time.”

Nine children were among 10 people killed in a fatal crash Saturday on an Alabama interstate that involved 18 vehicles, including two tractor-trailers and a bus from a home for abused, neglected and abandoned girls.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 65 in Butler County, Alabama, in what Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond described to ABC News as a “domino effect” crash.

Bond said the episode opened with two 18-wheelers plowing into a bus from a farm girl in Tallapoosa County. A car carrying the other two victims, a father and daughter, crashed nearby, he said.

Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock said one of the vehicles that caused the chain reaction crash is believed to have hydroplaned on the wet pavement. The crash occurred as Tropical Storm Claudette hit much of the Southeast. Bond said it was not raining at the time of the crash and could not confirm whether the crash was caused by a hydroplane vehicle.

Cody Fox, 29, and his 9-month-old daughter, Ariana Fox, died in the crash, Garlock said. Cody Foxx died on the scene and Ariana died in the hospital.

All eight deaths involved children between the ages of 4 and 17 who were riding on a Tallapoosa County Girls Farm bus. The children and the driver, identified by Bond as Candice Gulley, were the only occupants of the bus.

Gully was rescued by a man who got out of his car and pulled the driver to safety. Someone then tried to help the children, but the bus was engulfed in smoke and flames and could not reach them, authorities said.

Authorities said none of the survivors of the crash were in danger. A woman was taken to Montgomery Hospital with broken bones, Garlock said.

“Our hearts are heavy today. Our Ranch family has suffered a great loss. As many of you have heard, one of our Ranch vehicles was involved in a multi-vehicle accident yesterday afternoon. This is a terrible tragedy and loss.” . said Michael Smith, executive director of the Alabama Sheriff’s Youth Ranch.

Ivy wrote on Twitter: “My heart goes out to all the loved ones of the storm victims in Butler and Tuscaloosa counties. Let’s lift up these families, communities and first responders in prayer.”

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending 10 investigators, in coordination with the Alabama Highway Patrol, to investigate the safety of the crash.
