Family Devastated After Si Teens Killed In Speeding Mustang Crash

TOTTENVILLE, Staten Island (WABC) – Three teenagers in a red Ford Mustang were killed Sunday night when their car collided with a spinning SUV in Staten Island.

The incident occurred at 8:45 p.m. on Hylan Boulevard at Richard Avenue in Tottenville. New York City Mayor Eric Adams visited the site overnight while the investigation continued.

“It’s heartbreaking when we lose someone in any accident, but the loss of young lives is especially difficult,” Adams said Monday morning. “I was at the scene last night and the pain was palpable. My heart goes out to the families.”

His three passengers – 16-year-old Fernanda Gil, 15-year-old Jesie Gil and 15-year-old Ashley Rodriguez – died at the scene.

The Mustang was westbound on Hylan Boulevard when it collided with a black 2017 GMC Yukon that was turning left onto Richard Avenue.

“I heard a loud noise,” he said. “I found out. There was a body in the middle of the divider, a body behind my neighbor’s yard on this side of Hyland Boulevard, and two other kids stuck in the other half of the Mustang.”

The driver, who was 47, was arrested for driving with a suspended license and is currently facing charges.

The NYPD Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash, although authorities do not suspect speed was involved.

DOT Commissioner Yydanis Rodriguez said the Mustang was speeding and some passengers were not wearing seat belts.

The city recently lowered the speed limit in the area from 45 to 30, neighbors told Eyewitness News.

“Cops have been here before and they tried to stop it, but after they clean everything up, they start again,” said Nelson Mendez, a resident of the area. “So we’ll see what happens with that. Maybe they’ll turn on the lights.”

Rodriguez said the DOT will eliminate the Hylan Boulevard travel lane in the area and add left-turn lanes and a bike lane to make it safer.
