In 1893, Herman and Anna Raatz began providing loans to families and small businesses in what is now historic Valley Junction. Originally called First Valley Junction Savings Bank, West Bank gave this small railroad town the financial support it needed to grow and become one of the first settlements in West Des Moines.
Born in Elmira, New York in 1858, Herman Lars left home at age 20 to seek new opportunities in the crowded Midwest. For several years, he worked as a cigar maker in Jefferson, Iowa, as a clothing store manager in Rockwell City and Centerville, and as a banker in Rippy.
In 1883, he married Anna Craig, the daughter of Scottish immigrants who cultivated the thriving portions of the Mitchellville farm into a productive and valuable farm. No stranger to hard work, the new Mrs. Lars has proven to be a great partner at home and in business.

The ability of Ms. Lars’ banking career earned him an impressive reputation and respect throughout the Midwest. As Iowa’s first female banker, she was famous for recognizing the faces and signatures of nearly every merchant and worker in Valley Junction. According to legend, in his 15 years as a cashier, he never issued a check that was not genuine.
Besides running the bank, Mr. Lars is very involved in other aspects of small town life. He helped organize an independent school district and served as its treasurer for 14 years, was involved in several fraternal organizations and was known for his philanthropic efforts.
The story of how the Lars enriched their community is deeply rooted in the identity of the West Bank, and we will continue to do business based on the values they established more than 125 years ago.
West Bancorporation Foundation, Inc. was established. West Des Moines State Bank was renamed WestBank. WestBank purchased two Hawkeye State Bank branches in Iowa City. The new store is designed to enhance the banking experience, strengthen relationships, and create opportunities to contribute to the continued growth of our community.

Our new location is conveniently located at 3330 Westtown Parkway West Des Moines, IA 50266 and is easily accessible from I-235. Located just one mile west of our current headquarters, we are proud to contribute to the development of local communities by investing in areas in need of regeneration and renewal.
The new headquarters will maintain the same banking hours as the current headquarters. There will be no change to business hours due to the move.
West Des Moines Street will close at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2024. We will resume regular banking hours on Monday, April 15, our first official day at our new location at 3330 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
