Staten Island, N.Y. A 24-year-old operator was killed and a passenger was injured in a car crash Friday night in Eltingville.

At 11:50 p.m., police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle accident in front of 3687 Richmond Avenue. According to an NYPD spokesperson, officers found two people in a 2003 Ford Taurus at the scene.

EMS transported the 24-year-old driver to Staten Island University South Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police identified the deceased as Robert Altieri of Bulls Head.
The NYPD Highway Collision Investigation Team’s investigation revealed that the operator was traveling northbound on Richmond Avenue at a high rate of speed and apparently failed to navigate properly and struck a light pole.

TOTNVILLE, Staten Island (WABC) – A 47-year-old driver has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that killed three teenagers on Staten Island Sunday night.
Maher Asi-Mahmoud, 47, of Marlboro, New Jersey, was charged with aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and possession of a vehicle by an unlicensed driver.
It comes after the deaths of three teenagers riding in a red Ford Mustang Sunday night when their car collided with a turning SUV in Staten Island.
“It’s tragic when we lose someone in an accident, but it’s tragic, especially when a child is lost at such a young age,” Adams said Monday morning. “I was at the scene last night and was in a lot of pain. My thoughts are with the family.”

The only person in the vehicle to survive the crash was the 16-year-old driver of the Mustang. He is currently at Staten Island University Hospital North.
His three passengers – Fernanda Gil, 16, Jessie Gil, 15, and Ashley Rodriguez, 15 – were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Mustang was traveling westbound on Hylan Boulevard when it turned left onto Richard Avenue and collided with a black 2017 GMC Yukon driven by Asi-Mahmoud.
“I heard a big bang. “I ran outside. There was a body in the middle of the street, there was a body on the side of Highland Boulevard behind my neighbor’s house, and two other kids were trapped in the middle of the Mustang.”

Evangeline Santiago lost her best friend in Gil. She said they have been friends for four years.
“I’m always at his house. He’s at my house. We were here and there together. We always took his little brother with us,” said Santiago.
The NYPD Highway Patrol is now investigating the crash, but officials say speeding is not suspected as a factor.
DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said it appeared the Mustang was speeding and some passengers were not wearing seat belts.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News the city recently lowered the speed limit in the area from 45 to 30.
“The police were here before to try to stop, but after they took everything away, they started again,” said resident Nelson Mendez. “So we’ll see what happens with that. Maybe they’ll shed light.”
Rodriguez said the DOT will remove the lane and add a left turn lane and bike lane to Hylan Boulevard in an effort to make the area safer.
New York State law prohibits teen drivers from driving with more than one person under the age of 21.
