According to a California Highway Patrol incident log, the head-on collision happened around 9 a.m. near Campus Drive. Witnesses told CHP investigators that a man driving a silver Mercedes-Benz station wagon reached speeds of 100 mph when he drove into traffic shortly before the violent pileup.
The motorcyclist who was seriously injured in the incident was later identified by authorities as 23-year-old Luke Fitch of Newport Beach. He was taken to OC Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.
The woman died at the scene as a result of the collision between the white BMW sedan she was driving and the speeding Mercedes. Family members later identified her as Arda Glycerin, 65.
“Based on his previous reports of reckless driving and the manner in which he was driving, we are treating this as a possible intentional act,” CHP Sergeant Todd Kwaltz said. Obviously there are doubts, but until we get there and interview him and talk to the hospital, it’s too early to say one way or the other.

A 29-year-old man was killed and a woman was injured when the high-performance car they were in crashed at high speed at the end of a Newport Beach police chase, authorities said.
A man and a woman got into a 2016 Mercedes-AMG shortly after 1 a.m. after an argument at a local bar, CHP Officer Florentino Olero said.
The car sped off and Newport Beach police gave it a short chase south on Balboa Boulevard. Officers lost sight of the vehicle when it reached speeds of about 100 mph, Olero said.
The driver turned around at the end of the Balboa Peninsula and headed north on Balboa Boulevard, where police resumed the pursuit, Oliveira said.
