I had guests for lunch and ordered their a la carte taco menu with salad. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! In Greater Des Moines, not all of our food is served on a stick. Aposto offers one of the most unique dining experiences in the metro, with modern classics in an 1880 Victorian mansion. Located in Sherman Hill, Des Moines’ oldest neighborhood, Aposto focuses on simplicity and some of the dishes work very well. Whether it’s Italian dishes like wild mushroom and truffle gnocchi, Berkwood osso bucco, and their famous polenta cakes, the only mistake you can make is not leaving room for dessert.
After the small cheese shop was named “America’s Favorite Cheese Shop,” its growing popularity led to a larger branch, The Cheese Bar, and we’re even better at it. Their grilled cheeses have thousands of devotees, and their iron macaroni and cheese is not far behind. The soaring rooftops and beer and wine lists give it a European feel, but make no mistake: the food and people are nice in Iowa.
Bubba’s brings Southern hospitality to the heart of the Midwest with popular classics like Fried Green Tomatoes, Spicy Kentucky Brownies, and Buttermilk Fried Chicken. Wash it all down with a Mint Julep or two. The Southern charm doesn’t end in the dining room: chandeliers, high backs, Chesterfield sofas, and hexagonal tiles create an eating space that feels like dining.

Whether it’s a girls’ night out or a game night, Mulberry Street Tavern, located in the beautiful new Surety Hotel, is the place to be. And who doesn’t want to savor Scotch eggs and leg of lamb while sipping bubbles on a rich, warm mahogany bar? Burgundy Rum, your table is ready.
Nothing in life is as certain as death, taxes, and Simon’s favorite restaurant. Formerly known as J Benjamin’s, people line up outside this charming restaurant before it even opens to get a seat. That’s because Simon’s is one of the most consistent dining experiences in the metro, and Simon himself walks the dining room to ensure the perfect experience. And with comfort foods like Steak de Burgo, chicken nuggets, and lasagna, perfection is easy to achieve.
Centro deserves credit for helping make Des Moines the dining destination it is today and has a great reputation. Located in the heart of the city, in the renovated Art Gallery, this beautiful place serves the best of Italy in a beautiful atmosphere. Everything is good, but our favorite is their wood-fired pizza, which we put every day alongside the best in Chicago and New York.
They say luck is better than good luck. Lucky Lotus has two. Not only will you find South Asian dishes you won’t find anywhere else, like bing bing wrap (scallion pancake sandwich wrap), sweet potato panang curry, and pad lao noodles, but you’ll also see a place similar to Lucky Lotus. . Think “neon kung fu chic.” You’ll want to take home some of the brand’s amazing products and leftovers.

Des Moines’ premier steakhouse has everything you want in a good steakhouse; Rat Pack style, spacious booths, knowledgeable servers and some sweet potatoes at your side. Australian chef Alexander Hall has gained a following thanks to his numerous restaurant projects since he came to Des Moines by way of New York City.
