County Considers Slight Reduction In Property Tax Rate; Tax Bills Still Expected To Rise
Property taxes in Palm Beach County are based on the assessed value of the property. The Palm Beach County Property Assessor is responsible for appraising property values by January 1 and sending annual notices of proposed property taxes to property owners.
Taxable value is the property tax exemption minus the assessed value. The Palm Beach County tax collector uses this value to calculate taxes owed.
Under Florida law, the county assessor is required to remove all exemptions when the property is sold and reassess it to equalize the fair value and the assessed value. The sale price will be “fair value” or market value.
Property tax millage rates are set by local governments such as cities, school districts and counties. After the county commission, school board and other taxing bodies determine the tax rate, the county assessor multiplies the appropriate millage rate by the taxable value of the property and sends a certified tax bill to the tax collector.
