Hazel said: “I chose Midwifery Services because I had a personal interest and belief in midwifery long before I became a mother. “I wanted to be a midwife since I was 16!” She even attended Fayetteville State University to earn her midwifery certification after graduating from Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).

On the evening of December 5, 2019, Gwen Jelsma, who was 39 weeks pregnant, and her husband walked into the Iowa Methodist Medical Center hospital knowing they would be leaving with a new addition to their family.

“I didn’t know what to expect, I had never been a midwife before,” Gwen said. “I had all these expectations that I didn’t know I would meet, but after my first appointment with the Midwife, it was exactly what I wanted.”
Each appointment is reassuring and educational. He answers all of Gwen’s questions and anticipates the ones she might ask, making sure to check all the boxes to ensure that she has and continues to have a healthy pregnancy. “I get excited about every appointment,” Gwen said.
“I met all the midwives and built relationships with everyone. I didn’t feel like I was just a patient, I felt like my baby was more than a patient. They were so excited about me, acting pregnancy and pregnancy.” They accepted me and my experiences. They are like family.”
At every appointment, labor and postpartum, Gwen believed that her pregnancy journey from start to finish was beautiful because of her. Gwen and her husband arrived at Iowa Methodist Medical Center around 7 p.m. on Thursday night, and it wasn’t until 2:29 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2019 when Vivian Jelsma was born. As for Gwen, here she expected the treatment with the Midwife to stop, but to her surprise that was not the case.
“Just because my child is no longer with me, I don’t stop being important to him,” Gwen said. “I had regular weekly appointments to see them postpartum, and I ended up rescheduling the women’s regular visits so I could be with them.”
Gwen would recommend the midwifery services at Health – Des Moines to others and would choose her again for a second pregnancy if the risk was not high. However, they can still benefit from the connections and relationships they built during their first pregnancy.
“All the nurses were amazing, and the first midwife I met was Sea Fey, CNM, MSN, and she was amazing,” Gwen said. “A standout member of the team was Dawn Corriere, CNM, MSN. She was the midwife who delivered Vivian, and when I was pregnant with the twins, she was on call that night and came to the delivery room to talk with me and also attended the birth.
