The city spent $20.9 million on park maintenance this year to maintain 70 parks, and $125,000 is planned for new parks in the near future, according to J. Moys, business director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

These costs range from employee salaries and pension benefits, park water, equipment and vehicles, and special labor costs such as cutting down tall trees.

Henderson Park’s maintenance budget has increased over the past three years from $18.5 million in 2021 to $19.3 million in 2022.

The city’s parks maintenance budget exceeds the 2022-2023 Clark County Parks and Recreation budget. for the financial year in the amount of 15.1 million US dollars. The county uses that money to operate public parks and 16 community centers, according to county spokesman Rich Miller.

The Department has also been awarded the Parks and Recreation Gold Medal for Excellence in Parks and Recreation and the “Recreation and National Association; Park in 1999 and 2014.

Ferguson credits park maintenance staff for maintaining consistent quality throughout the city’s parks.

“We want every park, no matter where it’s located, to be within the city, they all look the same. They all have quality.”

Residents who frequent the park appreciate the cleanliness of the city. Jeremy Milton regularly trains at Henderson’s many parks and admits he’s never seen a “dirtier” park in the city.

Although Milton is well-kept, he added that all of Henderson’s parks are “basic” and mostly without attractions.

“(The park) we really need to improve the landscape, give a little more to the kids, a little more to the community,” Milton said.

In response to Milton’s criticism, Henderson spokeswoman Madeline Skanes said park visitors can share their thoughts with the parks and recreation department by calling or submitting a comment through the city’s website.

Parks and Recreation Director Kirk Niemand confirmed his department has responded to public feedback, saying participation is one of the hallmarks of park quality.

“I think the biggest thing we do is respond to what our people want,” he said.
