Celebrity plaintiff’s attorney John Gomez, who has appeared on almost ubiquitous television to represent those who have been wronged, injured or otherwise harmed, has committed a criminal offense in a serious dispute with a San Diego law firm.

The founder of Gomez Trial Attorneys filed a high-profile lawsuit against Consumer Lawyers of San Diego, a nonprofit organization dedicated to representing and promoting the interests of local attorneys, including Gomez, until recently.

Gomez, who was the party’s president in 2012, claims the party is now working to undermine his legal case by repeatedly claiming he is a frequent sexual abuser of women.

He accuses the group of publishing a 2021 report in the San Diego Union-Tribune that investigated sexual harassment complaints made against him over the years, and admits in the lawsuit to, among other things, heavy drinking and late-night texting.

The case, which has been termed a breach of contract case, has alleged that party leaders and several competing lawyers conspired to tarnish his name and damage his legal practice.

“This case tells how a jealous husband, a manipulative and ungrateful lawyer who embraces a fictitious ‘victim’ narrative, and a group of financially motivated white men conspired with CASD to create a collection of ‘good’ lies and deceit. Practices and malicious assault, harassment and wounding, one of the largest Latino-startup firms and one of the largest heterosexual and feminist law firms in California,” the complaint states.

San Diego Consumer Lawyers is a professional group of local litigation experts that has been around since at least 1960. Its members include some of the state’s leading lawyers. The team did not respond to a request for comment on Gomez’s lawsuit last week.

The legal complaint was filed last Monday in San Diego Superior Court. It is 38 pages long and lacks several pages of evidence to support its claims.

The document details a years-long dispute between Gomez and a handful of other attorneys, many of whom had previously worked for Gomez’s trial attorneys or accused Gomez of sexual assault or assault.

“Gomez is the first to admit that mistakes were made in his life,” the lawsuit alleges. “More than a decade ago, Gomez was drinking too much and staying up late.”

According to the complaint, San Diego Consumer Lawyers offers many events and speaking opportunities that can raise the profile of members and generate future business. Gomez said he and his staff were unfairly dismissed from the team.

“Defendant CASD therefore violated CASD’s rules, its membership agreement with Gomez, GTA and its attorneys, and a gross breach of its fiduciary duties,” the lawsuit alleges.

Some of the sexual assault allegations against Gomez were reported by the Union-Tribune in 2021 after a series of letters signed by half a dozen alleged victims began circulating in a San Diego courthouse.

The women told the newspaper that they wrote the letters to help each other and to prevent Gomez from raising his profile by accepting negotiations and memberships in legal organizations such as Consumer Advocates of California.

Gomez was dropped from at least one story because of the letter. He also resigned from the Board of Directors of the California Consumer Lawyers and withdrew his membership.

At the same time, however, Gomez denied the allegations, saying the attorneys in Los Angeles and San Diego wanted to expand the market share of personal injury legal services at the expense of his reputation.

The lawsuit also acknowledges that he was indicted twice for sexual assault in 2014 and that another attorney was accused of sexual assault more than a decade ago. Gomez also denied all these claims.

At one point, a woman accused Gomez of offering her a job for an affair. He claimed in his lawsuit that he mistakenly thought he wanted to date her.

“Gomez accepts responsibility for this offense,” the lawsuit states. “He was married at the time and should not have been dating or texting outside of his marriage while intoxicated. He regrets the harm he has done.”

Another lawsuit was filed by Gomez’s trial attorneys, who said Gomez flirted with her, made sexual comments and touched her in “offensive and sexually suggestive ways.”

One lawsuit was settled after Gomez agreed to make a charitable donation to a group that advocates for victims of sexual assault and harassment, records show. Another case was dismissed after arbitration proceedings began, the outcome of which is unknown.

“Filing a complaint as a prosecutor is generally a private matter,” says a footnote to the case. “However, in this case, those who wanted to harm Gomez and the GTA shared their inside knowledge of this conduct, ignoring the fact that they had filed a complaint.”

The case also disputes allegations of molestation by a woman with whom Gomez allegedly had an affair a decade or more ago. Since then, she and her husband have smeared Gomez with false allegations to tarnish her reputation, the complaint states.

In one of several pieces of evidence included in the complaint, Gomez included the results of a lie detector test that he said proved true when he denied sexually assaulting the woman.

“This supports the conclusion that physiological responses to test stimulus questions do not indicate deception,” the declassified report said.

Polygraph test results are generally not admissible in California court cases because the results are not always reliable.
