A Minnesota-based internet service provider for mobile home parks has begun expanding its services to Las Vegas.

On Thursday, Kwikbit Internet offered its Internet services to an independent home community in Southeast Las Vegas near Nellis Air Force Base. This is the 28th mobile home platform the company has launched its services in the United States and the fourth in Nevada, according to Kwikbit.

Pete Buchner, Kwikbit’s vice president of marketing, said Kwikbit’s Internet speed is one gigabit per second and costs $50 a month without a contract. Cox offers bundled gigabit Internet speeds for $99 a month, according to its website.
Kwikbit can offer lower prices because the company has lower costs, Buchner said. He said the company would reject existing fiber optic lines and lease services from the companies that own those lines. Internet signals are transmitted from fiber lines through devices installed throughout mobile home communities.
Kwikbit operates two other home parks in Las Vegas, and services launched last year in another community in Reno in February.
Kwikbit will focus on offering its services to mobile home communities because of their nearby, low-cost infrastructure that allows access to a large number of customers in one location, according to Buchner. He added that many Internet providers are not investing in bringing high-quality home Internet options to mobile home communities.

“Investing in fiber for homes in 200-300 communities is not economically viable,” said Buchner.
Buchner said there are no plans to expand Kwikbit’s services beyond mobile home communities, and there is plenty of room to operate in this market.
The Institute for Manufactured Housing estimates there are 8.2 million mobile homes, sometimes called manufactured homes, and 21.2 million residents nationwide.
“We think there’s a lot of funding for us, and we need our share,” Buchner said. “It’s a huge untapped and, frankly, overlooked.”

Kwikbit has been operating across the country for the past two years, and mobile home communities using its services have seen higher rates and fewer people move out, Buchner says. According to him, 15-20 percent of residents initially signed up for internet service through Kwikbit, and the number will increase rapidly as more residents are offered the company.
The company plans to expand to 100 mobile home communities by the end of the year. Buchner said the company will focus its growth on several offices in the US, including Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Northern California and Central Florida. Buchner did not disclose when Kwikbit will expand to other mobile home communities in Nevada.
