24 Hour Nurse Hotline Pregnancy

Pregnancy, birth and baby provides free, non-judgmental emotional support and reassurance. We provide guidance on children’s growth, behavior and development and can refer parents to local services. Our midwives/maternal health nurses work with parents to ensure the health and well-being of their children and families.

Prenatal Care And Tests

We can provide you and your partner with support and advice for your emotional needs before and after the baby is born.

We are here for you if you want to discuss your pregnancy options or if you have had a pregnancy loss.

If someone calls Pregnancy, Birth and Baby and they or their baby is unwell, they will be transferred to the nurse triage line: HealthDirect, Nurse on Call or 13 Health, depending on their location.

Pregnancy, Birth and Baby provides phone and video support seven days a week (7am to midnight Australian time). Parents can access our information in 4 ways:

Calls will be queued to be answered by the first available midwife/maternal care nurse. After answering, they:

Symptomatic callers may be transferred to Nurse Triage to assess their symptoms and need to see a physician or other healthcare professional.

Secondary Consultation Service: Support For Health Professionals

In some parts of Australia they may be known as ‘child and family health nurses’, but in others, such as Victoria, where our nurses are registered, they are known as ‘maternal and child health nurses’.

Maternal and Child Health Nurse Practitioners (MCHNs) must be qualified as registered nurses and midwives and have a postgraduate diploma in child and family health.

This means they have experience in all aspects of preconception counseling, pregnancy and birth care, and newborn and child health and development.

All of our maternal and child health nurses have worked as midwives in hospitals or birthing centers and in community centres, supporting and counseling families.

Hrsa Maternal Mental Health Hotline

Some of our nurses have worked in NICUs with premature or sick babies, while others have worked with families in sleep/housing centers.

Pregnancy, Birth & Baby offers a video call service that allows you to speak with one of our nurses. This can be very helpful if you are having trouble with breastfeeding, diapering, toilet training, or swaddling and holding your baby. We can provide you with practical advice and demonstrations.

Every two weeks, ask a nurse Q&A on pregnancy, birth and baby Instagram. Our maternal and child health nurses answer members’ questions on selected topics.

You can call the Interpreting Service and connect with Pregnancy, Birth and Baby later, or you can call us first and we can arrange an interpreter if needed.

Making A Birth Plan

If, during a call, a nurse believes that a child is at risk of abuse or neglect, she is required by law to contact the appropriate state child welfare agency.

Legal sanctions related to pregnancy, childbirth and infants may apply for failure to report child abuse/neglect and suspected child abuse/neglect.

Maternal and child health nurses will discuss these concerns directly and openly with the caller. Members will be asked to contact the relevant Child Protection Authority directly for support for themselves and/or other participants.

When a third party contacts children with concerns about the pregnancy, birth, and child (for example, a grandmother calls with concerns about her grandchildren who do not live with her), she is recommended to report directly to the state and authorities, based on which she will be given details of the appropriate child welfare agency.

In all cases where the caller refuses, the Pregnancy, Childbirth and Infant Service will prepare a report for him.
