SAN DIEGO, Calif. (November 9, 2023) – At least one person was killed in a motorcycle crash Thursday morning in San Diego.

A California Highway Patrol trooper was seriously injured Tuesday when his motorcycle collided with an SUV on an Escondido street, the CHP said.

Joseph Heitman, a 13-year veteran of the force, was traveling east on Via Rancho Parkway near Lomas Serenas Drive east of Interstate 15 when a silver SUV rear-ended his motorcycle. Around 12:50 p.m., CHP Officer Salvador Castro said.
Castro said Heitman – who was on his way to work – was unable to avoid the silver SUV, crashed into it and was thrown from the motorcycle onto the road.
Heitman suffered serious injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

Authorities Search For Second Driver In Deadly Calif. Crash
The woman driving the silver SUV was not injured and was cooperating with the CHP investigation, Castro said. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
A silver jeep and a badly damaged motorcycle were seen there. The front fender of the SUV was crushed, and pieces of both vehicles were scattered on the road.
Investigators are collecting evidence at the scene of the accident and talking to other witnesses to determine the circumstances of the accident.

A motorcycle and a Toyota Prius collided at the intersection of West Mission Bay Drive and Dana Landing shortly before 9 p.m.
Motorcyclist Killed In Encinitas Crash
A motorcyclist and a passenger in a Toyota Prius were killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on Mission Beach Road, San Diego police said.
The 34-year-old motorcyclist was traveling west on West Mission Bay Drive shortly before 9 a.m. when he struck a Toyota that was making a right turn onto Dana Landing, police said. The motorcyclist was trying to pass the Toyota on the right when he struck the vehicle, police Sgt. Victoria Hausman said in an email.
The driver was thrown from the motorcycle and landed on the northwest side of the road. He died before being taken to hospital, police said.
Video captured by Onscene TV shows the roof of the Prius being cut off to allow firefighters and paramedics access to the damaged vehicle.
Authorities Identify Man Killed In South Side Motorcycle Crash
The passenger was taken to the hospital, where he died, the police said. Police initially said the passenger was a “little girl.”
A 38-year-old woman who was in the car received minor scratches. The driver of the Prius and two other passengers, described as minors, were not injured.
