“Honestly, it hurts me because I think it’s impacting these students’ progress, not only academically, but their mental and emotional health,” Williams said.
He said his church had intended to hold the event in late November or December, but after a high school student was shot and killed near Norcross High School last week, he immediately planned to hold the event earlier.
“What can we do to stop this?” Williams asked in an interview. “We don’t want to stop anything. We don’t want a temporary solution. We want to create a solution that helps provide a better learning environment for our students.”
Williams said at the meeting in New Jersey that the goal would be to help students develop conflict resolution skills.

“We want to empower students and teach conflict resolution skills,” Williams said. “At the root of what happens in schools is that students don’t have the skills and ability to resolve conflicts.”
In mid-October, Shiloh High School was placed on a partial lockdown after the school’s principal said someone had entered the school after the buses had left and may have fired a gun.

“It doesn’t resolve the conflict. There’s no good way to do that when there’s violence, when we put weapons on things that could happen with simple communication.”
Williams added to New Mercy Agenda that Wednesday’s meeting will be the start of a series of programs aimed at ending youth violence in schools. So they can renovate single-family homes.

“All our neighbors are ready to tear down our churches and replace them with a house or three,” he said.
The High Point Civic Association, the community group representing the Sandy Springs area, won’t take action until it sees a specific plan for the redevelopment, President Bill Gannon said.
The 2-acre church property went on the market in the last week of October. Another 31 buyers have already arrived, Bednar said. There were many builders, he said, while there was a church, but they needed a bigger building.

Metropolitan Baptists was founded in a different time: in 1969, with 40 members who began meeting in someone’s home. He arrived in Sandy Springs in the early 1970s with about 100 members and purchased the former residence at a low price. Davis recalled that the location was once a hunting lodge and that the original Sunday School was a 1910s or 1920s hunting lodge, built of stone and still with “antlers on the wall.” It became too expensive to repair, Davis said, and it was demolished in the 1980s and replaced by a church. However, the building’s stone chimneys and fireplaces remain at the rear of the church.
Davis also recalled that the church site was originally larger and that a piece was sold for reconstruction in the 1980s.

Now Metropolitan Baptist faces the end of that story. Bednar said the church held an annual celebration in June that served as a farewell. But its doors will remain open to all on Wednesdays and Sundays, Christmas and other special events until the ink on the sales contract is dry.
