Widespread Cox Internet Outage In Las Vegas
Vegetarians in Las Vegas now have another option when it comes to choosing a wireless carrier, and one that may be cheaper.
Cox Communications on Monday announced the soft launch of Cox Mobile, a cell phone service with rates starting at $15 and available in only three markets, including Las Vegas.
The service is available to existing Cox home internet customers and allows customers to consolidate their phone, cable and internet bills.
While the service is only available in Las Vegas, as well as Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Omaha, Nebraska, there are plans to expand to other markets “continuously throughout the year,” according to a company statement. The company serves 6.5 million customers in 18 states.

Cox said it considers several factors when deciding where to launch its mobile service, including “regional presence, sales force readiness and potential growth,” according to Susie Black-Manriquez, Cox’s director of communications.
“We are monitoring the wireless industry closely and believe it is time to intervene at the request of customers,” Black-Manriquez said in an email.
Customers can choose from two data plans – Pay As You Gig and Gig Unlimited.
Pay As You Gig allows customers to pay only for the data they use and costs $15 per GB per month. Gig Unlimited costs $45 per month and provides users with unlimited data.

Both plans offer unlimited talk and texting, 4G LTE and 5G coverage, and access to Cox Wi-Fi hotspots, according to Cox.
Because customers aren’t locked into an annual contract, they have the option to change their data plan “when they need to,” Black-Manriquez said.
Cox is not the first cable and Internet provider to launch cell phone service. Dish Wireless launched the first 5G wireless network in the Las Vegas Valley earlier this year.
“We conducted extensive research to understand what our customers want and expect from their mobile service provider,” Mark Greatrex, president of Cox Communications, said in a press release. “Cox Mobile gives our customers what they demand – a simple, flexible and reliable mobile experience wherever they go.”

Education was forced to go online after schools closed in Nevada, but in the world of digital learning, children are falling behind without reliable internet access.
In Clark County, the school district has created a partnership with Cox Communications to address this issue and expand Internet access for students who need it. Connect2Compete, the company’s program that provides internet access to low-income households eligible for government benefits, was first created in 2012 and has expanded dramatically in the past few weeks, with the company offering two months of free service to those in need.
“It’s kind of based on a national study about the needs of our communities across the country,” Tamar Hubelli, director of community relations at Cox Las Vegas, said of creating the program. “Many families are connected via their mobile phones, for example, but are not physically connected at home.”
Previously, to qualify for the program, families had to meet several conditions. In addition to having at least one K-12 student in the family and receiving government benefits, families cannot have bad debt with Cox or be a Cox customer for 90 days before applying.

“Due to the pandemic, and knowing there was a need for students, we made some changes,” Hubili said.
Cox has now waived the no-bad credit requirement, allowing any eligible low-income family with students who does not have a current contract with Cox to enroll. Additionally, Cox is offering the first 60 days of service free, eliminating data redundancy and increasing speeds for existing customers. After those first 60 days, the service costs $9.95 per month.
“If we have existing [Connect2Compete] customers, we upgrade their service levels from 25 Mbps to 50 Mbps,” Hubili said. “So there are still some benefits for our existing customers. They will get faster speeds during the pandemic.
To make the application process easier for families and ensure that every family in need has access, Cox works directly with the school district to identify homes eligible for service. School administrators provide Cox with a list of addresses of families eligible for the program, and families are automatically approved, making it easier for families to follow the online application process.
Cox Committed To Employees, Community
Hubili explained that Cox does not receive the names of students or families, but if families apply at an eligible address, they will automatically be approved to provide the service.
While Clark is the only county in Nevada that employs Cox, other school districts in the county recommend resources for families who need internet access. Washoe County recommends families contact Charter or AT&T, which provides low-income families with unlimited internet for $10 a month.
In addition to the Connect2Compete program, Cox has made additional efforts to help families weather the pandemic. While field technicians are no longer allowed to enter homes to provide support, they will come to homes to help by phone or from a safe distance. Cox also opened more than 3,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in southern Nevada to support the FCC’s pledge to “keep Americans connected.”
This story was updated at 1:00 pm on April 7, 2020 to correct an incorrect statement made by Hoapili, who said restrictions had been lifted for existing Cox customers. These restrictions remain in effect.
