The Suzuki SV650 isn’t the fastest or prettiest sports bike money can buy. What makes them so great is the versatility you can get as a motorcycle for less than $5,000.
According to Suzuki UK, the SV650 was launched in 1999 as an affordable motorcycle with a long-lasting V-twin engine and was suitable for a wide range of riders and uses. It has a medium weight that allows you to travel, travel and even take it with you across the country. The SV650 is both versatile and maneuverable. Suzuki didn’t expect it to become popular with a near-cult following.
The company says the SV650 has become the track weapon of choice for many drivers. Personally, I’ve also seen SV650s stripped down for off-road use, SV650s converted into stunt bikes, SV650s outfitted for touring, and yes, SV650s used by city riders. Apparently, if you dream of a motorcycle, you can also have an SV650. I noticed that they are fully customized, with lots of chrome, extended bezels, custom wheels, under lighting, speakers and much more.
The type of Suzuki SV650 you buy depends on your budget and what is available in your area. The first-generation SV650 features a 645cc V-twin engine that produces a good 69 hp and around 45 lb-ft of torque. It still reaches a top speed of about 130 miles per hour. It weighs approximately 417 pounds with a seat height of 31.7 inches. These first generation motorcycles have carburetors. So if you don’t want to bother with it, switch to the second generation, which was released in 2003.

For the second generation, you get extras like a die-cast aluminum trellis frame, new bodywork, a new swingarm, a digital display and fuel injection. Output has been increased slightly to 74 hp and 47.2 lb-ft of torque. It weighs approximately 437 pounds with a 31.5-inch seat.
The SV650 you see here is another generation with a full fairing. If you want to see the engine, you can find it with bikini coating. I’ve never taken one of these to the track, but I can say that it’s pretty fun to drive, practical and fairly maneuverable. They are an excellent all-round motorcycle. However, some people say that these may be entry-level bikes. I think they can, but I wouldn’t recommend it. They still have more than enough power to get an inexperienced motorcyclist into serious trouble. $3,500 from a dealer in Monroe, Wisconsin.
In 2001, Harley-Davidson achieved something that few expected. The automaker known for motorcycles that look and ride decades old has unveiled a technological masterpiece. The VRSC (also known as V-Rod) is a muscle bike that breaks away from the usual Harley trim. It starts with a hydroformed tubular frame covered in anodized aluminum bodywork. The tank isn’t even a real tank, it’s an airbox. Instead, the engineers moved the actual tank and the associated weight to the rear and under the seat. There is something special hidden under this airbox tank dummy. The car manufacturer worked with none other than Porsche to develop the V-Twin.
Car and Driver points out that the Revolution engine bolted to the chassis is based on the underpinnings of the Harley-Davidson VR1000 racing engine, originally built with Cosworth and Roush and later used for AMA Superbike racing. It is a liquid-cooled 60-degree V-twin with four valves per cylinder and an overhead camshaft. The result is 115 hp from a 1,131 cc engine. The release states that the V-Rod can cover the quarter mile in 11 seconds before reaching a top speed of 135 mph. And this engine hits 9,000 rpm, which is incredible for a Harley. A V-Rod sounds and drives like nothing the engine manufacturer has ever made.

The V-Road was an interesting vehicle for Harley. In 2008, the automaker said 20 percent of V-Rod drivers were women and 50 percent had come to buy the vehicle from another brand. Additionally, 60 percent of V-Rod sales were to Europeans. These featured seats sit just 26 inches off the ground, which is great if you’re not tall. They are on the heavy side at 615.5 pounds.
The V-Rod started at $16,995 ($29,199 today) for the 2002 model year. 2017 was the last year for V-Rod and it looks like they slipped through the cracks. Today? You can find these for five thousand. I’ve seen some of these travel over 100,000 miles, so they should be able to cover that distance. Here is an older V-Rod. Not much detail is given, but it looks quite nice. Luckily, if Ohio didn’t have that $4,500 V-Rod, I’d buy it myself.
Not everyone wants to ride a fully loaded motorcycle. I completely understand that and would even keep a few scooters alongside my motorcycles. Scooters offer a good experience on two wheels in a different way. In my experience, they are generally easier for a new rider to get used to, sometimes easier to work with, and you can often find them in fun, futuristic designs. A person who no longer has the skills to ride a motorcycle can repair the motorcycle on a scooter.
So which scooter would I recommend? A Honda Helix. I’ve had the pleasure of driving both a Helix clone and a real Helix and they are great rides. The Helix features a padded seat, soft suspension and a high windshield. Mine sometimes reaches speeds of 77 miles per hour, which is quite a distance. I’m also a fan of digital screens.

The Helix was introduced in 1986 in response to the problem of scooters not having enough capacity for general street use. Honda solved this problem by giving the Hilux a long wheelbase (longer than most motorcycles), a large trunk for storage, seating for two, good brakes and a large windshield.
The publication marveled that the scooter had a longer wheelbase than the Harley-Davidson, had a smoother ride and felt at home in corners, but noted that touring was sometimes frustrating due to hills and cold winds.
Helix was never a bestseller, but still has a fan base to this day. It was sold from 1986 to 1987 and then discontinued due to low demand. It returned in 1992 and remained on sale until 2002, when the Helix was replaced by the Reflex. Hilux fans demanded it back and Honda put it back into production from 2003 to 2007.
Power comes from a single 244cc engine with 19 horsepower. Its seat sits 26.2 inches off the ground and weighs 349.4 pounds. It’s listed at a dealer in Peoria, Illinois, for $2,500.

The BMW GS is known for its ability to cover long distances, whether on the road or on the trail. I have friends who have traveled thousands of miles across the United States and beyond. These people say they wouldn’t buy anything else. Personally, I find the recommended bikes remarkable, even if you never ride them off-road. They fill the scooter’s swallowing holes without disturbing their riders.
