There are luxury hotels like the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, luxury hotels like the All-Star Resort, and many others in between.
But did you know that there are also local hotels where you can leave your pet on vacation?
Disney World has always provided basic pet care. When Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground opened in 1971, it had kennels, and Disney has since added kennels to each of its four theme parks.

But in the early 2000s, Disney was ready to outsource this work. Best Friends Pet Care took over Disney Kennels in 2008 and opened its own facility on Disney property in Lake Buena Vista, Florida in 2010.
Today, Best Friends Pet Hotel offers one-stop lodging, grooming and other services on Disney property.
Insider spoke with Best Friends Pet Hotel managers Ray Crennel and Leo Reynoso about the hotel, the animals they care for and the services they offer.
Mr. Crennel has worked at Best Friends Pet Care for 10 years and Mr. Reynoso has been with the company for 16 years.

Reynoso said of Disney’s old kennel, “It used to be that you would bring your dog over and we would take care of him by walking him, feeding him and giving him water, but there were no specific activities to decorate or enrich his stay. There was nothing,” he said.
But today’s hotels have plenty of amenities and activities, he said. Send your puppy to a dog day camp, book your cat’s grooming appointment or leave your pet safe.

It was a “slow day” at the hotel when Insider spoke with Crennel and Reynoso. Nevertheless, there were more than 100 animals in the facility.

“At the end of the day, we have 110 pets today, and that’s considered very, very, very slow for us,” Crennel said.
Reynoso said about 20 of those reservations were made by people who evacuated from Tampa, Florida, ahead of Hurricane Idalia.
“We’re also a hurricane shelter, so we can respond and double our usage this time of year when storms threaten,” he said.
Pocket pets often include rabbits, sugar snappers, ferrets, “a lot of birds” and turtles, Reynoso said. I have been asked several times to take care of betta fish.

“We have a turtle named Mr. Bubbles who comes to our house seven times a year,” Reynoso said. “He’s awesome.”
Reynoso said pot-bellied pigs were at the facility “all the time” and ducks were also frequent visitors.
“We have a lady who brings us five ducks every year,” Crennel said. “They actually take over our club room and lay eggs everywhere.”
Reynoso said hotel staff can care for any animal that is “non-venomous, except primates.” However, people *always* ask to bring exotic animals.

“There were crazy, crazy things like tarantulas and hissing cockroaches,” he said. “Then we got a call that we had to evacuate with our zebras during the hurricane.”
“Sometimes people try to smuggle these pets into the park,” Reynoso said. “So I got a call from Disney and I said, ‘Hey, this lady just wanted to take her baby kangaroo to Animal Kingdom. Would you be willing to take them for the day?’ We hang out with them from time to time.

Although the center is located on Disney World property, you don’t have to visit a theme park to drop off your pet.
“A common misconception is that we’re a Disney monopoly,” Reynoso said. “But you don’t have to be on a Disney property to use us for treatment or other services. We’re on a Disney property and we’re kind of sponsored by Disney. But there are people who go to Disney properties, Busch Gardens in Tampa or Universal in Orlando.
However, when you visit Disney World, you will notice that the hotel opening hours are exactly the same as the theme park opening hours.
“We’re open during park hours,” Crennel said. “That means we open an hour before the first park opens and close an hour after the last park closes. We are also staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

“Everybody in Florida is considered a local here,” Reynoso said. “Some people bring their dogs from Miami or Jacksonville, and the Disney Cruise Line is an hour and a half away. So if you’re going on a cruise, and not just a Disney cruise, you can bring your pet here. I’ll take it downstairs with you.”
“We have people who come here from Canada as snowbirds,” he continued. “So we really have people here from all over the world.”
